I\u2019m proud of each and every one of you,\u201d Biden began. \u201cThis past year has been an extraordinarily difficult year for our country and for the world. Times of loss and anxiety and disruption, and I know you felt it, too. Losing loved ones and friends, losing time with each other, but you\u2019ve been incredibly resilient, and you\u2019re ready for what comes next.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo graduating class gets to choose the world in which they graduate,\u201d he continued. \u201cEvery class enters the history of the nation up to the point that has been written by others.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then, in the traditional we-have-to-change-our country platitudinous mantra Democrats have been proclaiming for decades, Biden gushed, \u201cBut few classes \u2014 once in every few generations \u2014 enters at a point in our history where it actually has a chance to change the trajectory of the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And so, back to the 1960\u2019s: \u201cJust three years after I stood where you\u2019re standing, two of my political heroes, Dr. King and Robert Kennedy, were gunned down. The Vietnam war divided the nation and divided families. We were in the midst of a great movement for civil rights, women\u2019s rights, and environmental rights. We faced an inflection point, and we did our best to seize that moment because things were changing so rapidly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Biden then linked his preceding statements to \u201csystemic racism\u201d and climate change:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"12\">\n<p><em>And now, you face another inflection point. As we put this pandemic behind us, rebuild our economy, root out systemic racism, and tackle climate change, we\u2019re addressing the great crises of our time with a greater sense of purpose than ever before.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Back to lionizing the graduates: \u201cAnd because of you, your generation, I\u2019ve never been more optimistic about the future than I am today. You represent one of the most gifted and talented and well-educated generations in American history.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A terrifying pronouncement: \u201cAnd you\u2019re going to see more change in the next ten years than we saw in the last 50 years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut it\u2019s going to be up to you,\u201d Biden stated. \u201cIt\u2019s going to be up to you to translate that unprecedented change into a greater measure of happiness and prosperity for not only you and our nation, but for the world around you. And I know you will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of Biden during the Vietnam War era, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/factcheck\/2020\/09\/16\/fact-check-biden-received-multiple-draft-deferments-vietnam\/5809482002\/\">USA Today<\/a> noted:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"19.466666666667\">\n<p><em>Biden came of age amid the Vietnam War. But unlike millions of men of his generation, he never served in the military. Biden received five student draft deferments,\u00a0first as an undergraduate at the University of Delaware and later as a law student at Syracuse University. And after a medical exam in\u00a0April 1968, he\u00a0received the \u201c1-Y\u201d classification, which meant he could only be drafted in a national emergency. \u2026<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>He received four student draft deferments while an undergraduate at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. And in the spring of 1968, he, too, received the \u201c1-Y\u201d classification \u2014 for bone spurs in his heels, per\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/08\/02\/us\/politics\/donald-trump-draft-record.html\" data-t-l=\":b|e|inline click|${u}\">The New York Times<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"8.7974683544304\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Congratulations to the Class of 2021.
