Angus King, I-Maine, said Sunday he won\u2019t support the Democrats\u2019 voting rights proposal.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview on CNN\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CNNPolitics\/status\/1401534665845096448\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cState of the Union,\u201d<\/a> King said \u201cwe got to focus on what the most crucial issue is, which is protecting democracy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>\u201c<\/b>I think there are things\u00a0that can be modified [in the<b> <\/b>For the People Act] and [Senate Leader] Chuck\u00a0Schumer [D-N.Y.]\u00a0knows that and [Sen.] Amy\u00a0Klobuchar [D-Minn.]\u201d he said. \u201cI&#8217;ve said that all\u00a0along.\u00a0It&#8217;s a 900,000 page bill.\u00a0There are things that need to be\u00a0negotiated.\u00a0And I think [Sen.] Joe Manchin [D-W.Va.] realizes\u00a0that.<b>\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<p>According to King, the \u201cguts\u201d of the bill is voting rights, but there are other pieces as well.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt has, for example, public\u00a0financing of elections,\u201d he noted. \u201cBut the important part for me is\u00a0protecting voting rights and I\u00a0think that&#8217;s becoming more\u00a0urgent by the day based upon\u00a0what&#8217;s going on around in the\u00a0states.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said what\u2019s not being discussed is that \u201clots of states are considering\u00a0changes that the legislature\u00a0could overturn the results of an\u00a0election in their state.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVoting rights is critical\u2026 We got to focus on what the most\u00a0crucial issue is, which is\u00a0protecting democracy,\u201d he said<b>.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>King also lamented the lack of punishments meted out by the United States to cybersecurity breaches.<\/p>\n<p><b>\u201c<\/b>There has been some responses both from [the National Security Agency] and from the Biden\u00a0administration in terms of\u00a0things like sanctions\u00a0\u2026 but I think we need to step that\u00a0up,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the problems is over the\u00a0past 15 or 20 years as we&#8217;ve had\u00a0these series of cyberattacks\u00a0from North Korea, Russia, China,\u00a0we really haven&#8217;t responded.\u00a0We&#8217;ve been a cheap date and you\u00a0can&#8217;t defend yourself simply by\u00a0bobbing, weaving and patching.\u00a0The adversary has to realize\u00a0there will be a cost for\u00a0attacking the United States or\u00a0our critical infrastructure and\u00a0thus far they haven&#8217;t felt that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added there\u2019s a Russian criminal\u00a0organization and that Moscow has to \u201cquit tolerating this\u00a0within their border.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey can&#8217;t just say, \u2018we don&#8217;t\u00a0know anything about this\u2019,\u201d he said. \u201cA sparrow doesn&#8217;t fall in Russia\u00a0that [Russian President Vladimir] Putin doesn&#8217;t know about.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He argued for a new relationship between business and government on cybersecurity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think some kind of\u00a0mandatory incident reporting is\u00a0going to be necessary and it&#8217;s\u00a0got to be burdens and benefits,\u00a0particularly for these important\u00a0critical infrastructure pieces,\u201d King argued.<\/p>\n<p><b>Related Stories;<\/b><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sen.
