The state is set to fully reopen its economy on June 15.<\/p>\n<p>Councilman Dennis Woods noted before the vote that the community is \u201cjust coming out of covid\u201d and \u201cit seems like the perfect time to do a paradigm shift.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mayor Christy Gilbert Holstege, who voted to approve the expenditure, described the move as \u201ca sudden judgment\u201d to cancel a \u201c50-year\u201d tradition.<\/p>\n<p>The Palm Springs Desert Sun <a href=\"https:\/\/www.desertsun.com\/story\/news\/local\/palm-springs\/2021\/05\/27\/palm-springs-july-4-laser-light-show-planned-instead-fireworks\/7481349002\/\">reported<\/a>, \u201cAn agenda item about approving funds for fireworks was originally on the council\u2019s consent calendar on May 6; typically, items on the consent calendar are items recommended by staff and passed without discussion by council members.\u201d However, according to the outlet, \u201cCouncilman Geoff Kors requested that the item be removed from the consent calendar for discussion after several community members offered comments opposing the fireworks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kors specifically raised concerns about frightened pets and wildlife, veterans and others who have PTSD, toxins, and people with respiratory issues. Some community members who called in to the virtual meeting mentioned air, noise, and light pollution, along with potential harmful effects on victims of gun violence. Kors said \u201cwe didn\u2019t have one comment from people saying they support\u201d funding the fireworks show. Councilmember Grace Elena Garner argued, \u201cNobody thinks they need to call in to defend fireworks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy phone is lighting up now because of all of the people going, \u2018What? What just happened? Johnson, a local Vietnam veteran who reportedly has PTSD, <a href=\"https:\/\/kesq.com\/news\/2021\/05\/07\/community-reacts-to-cancellation-of-palm-springs-fourth-of-july-fireworks\/\">told<\/a> News Channel 3 that the city\u2019s efforts are misguided.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo the fireworks for the public, don\u2019t blame the veterans,\u201d he said. \u201cI think city council needs to get back in their chambers and think of a better solution.
