The tweet was sent by a now-suspended parody account.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span>Fact Check:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Facebook post shows what appears to be a screen grab of a tweet sent by Waters. The tweet reads: \u201cEvery single gun owner I have talked to has told me, \u2018As soon as I walked out of that gun store, I felt a killer growing inside of me.\u2019 When will we acknowledge there is no such thing as a responsible gun owner?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Waters, however, never sent such a tweet. Check Your Fact searched Waters\u2019 verified Twitter accounts \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MaxineWaters\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@MaxineWaters<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepMaxineWaters\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@RepMaxineWaters<\/a> \u2014 but found no instances of the remark. ProPublica\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/projects.propublica.org\/politwoops\/user\/MaxineWaters\">archive<\/a> of her deleted tweets likewise showed no such tweet. The comment does not appear on her <a href=\"https:\/\/waters.house.gov\/search\/node\/When%20will%20we%20acknowledge%20there%20is%20no%20such%20thing%20as%20a%20responsible%20gun%20owner\">website<\/a>, or in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/search?q=%7B%22source%22%3A%22congrecord%22%2C%22search%22%3A%22%5C%22When%20will%20we%20acknowledge%20there%20is%20no%20such%20thing%20as%20a%20responsible%20gun%20owner%3F%5C%22%22%7D&#038;searchResultViewType=expanded\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">congressional record<\/a> either.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, the screen grabbed tweet shows it was sent by the account @MaxinePWaters, not one of Waters\u2019 verified accounts. An <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/2iDtQ#selection-1339.105-1339.120\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">archived<\/a> screen grab of the account from 2018 shows that the bio section of the account described it as a \u201cparody account.\u201d The account has since been <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MaxinePWaters\">suspended<\/a> for violating Twitter rules. <a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2021\/03\/25\/fact-check-us-zero-mass-shootings-donald-trump-president\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Did The US Have Zero Mass Shootings While Donald Trump Was President?)<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Waters has been a vocal proponent for gun policy reform, and co-sponsored the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/116th-congress\/house-bill\/1296\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/116th-congress\/house-bill\/1296&#038;source=gmail&#038;ust=1622856122024000&#038;usg=AFQjCNHzaOCKiiT2x0egt8cRucYmnuQIDQ\">Assault Weapons Ban of 2019<\/a>, a bill that aimed to prohibit manufacturing, selling and possessing semiautomatic assault weapons, according to its description from the Congressional Research Service, though the bill did not pass the House. In a June 2016 sit-in with other Democratic representatives on the House floor to demand a vote on gun control legislation, Waters said, \u201cI am prepared to stay here until hell freezes over,\u201d USA Today <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2016\/06\/22\/house-democrats-stage-sit-in-over-gun-legislation\/86241864\/\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This is not the first time a tweet about gun control has been incorrectly attributed to Waters. Check Your Fact in February <a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2021\/02\/25\/fact-check-maxine-waters-no-reason-own-gun-tweet\/\">debunked<\/a> the baseless claim that Waters sent a tweet saying, \u201cThere is no reason for anyone to own a gun.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An image shared on Facebook purportedly shows a tweet by Democratic California Rep.
