The moratorium has resulted in more than $13 billion in unpaid rent per month since it was introduced, the coalition wrote to the high court.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCongress never gave the CDC the staggering amount of power it now claims,\u201d the groups\u2019 filing said. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/01\/25\/american-renters-rent-payments-urban-institute\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Nearly 20% Of American Renters Are Behind On Payments, Analysis Shows)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The CDC <a href=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/public-inspection.federalregister.gov\/2020-19654.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">first issued<\/a> the moratorium in September in response to the large uptick in Americans entering the unemployed rolls. Santiago\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2020\/09\/09\/centers-diseas-control-prevention-health-human-services-sued-eviction-moratorium-civil-liberties-landlord\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">series of lawsuits<\/a> have been <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/02\/26\/eviction-moratorium-unconstitutional\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">brought against the CDC<\/a>, arguing that issuing such a sweeping order was outside the health agency\u2019s congressionally mandated authority.<\/p>\n<p>In May, a judge for the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia <a href=\"https:\/\/www.supremecourt.gov\/DocketPDF\/20\/20A169\/180893\/20210603170556355_SCOTUS%20Application%20to%20Vacate%20Stay%20-%20Appendix%20-%20Lower%20Court%20Orders%20and%20Opinions.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ruled in favor<\/a> of the Alabama Association of Realtors. The judge ruled that the CDC wasn\u2019t able to issue such an order, but declined to put the ruling in effect until an appeal was heard.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.supremecourt.gov\/DocketPDF\/20\/20A169\/180893\/20210603170556355_SCOTUS%20Application%20to%20Vacate%20Stay%20-%20Appendix%20-%20Lower%20Court%20Orders%20and%20Opinions.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">denied the realtor groups\u2019 motion<\/a> to put the ruling in effect and block the moratorium in a decision filed Wednesday.
