The few excerpts that the cable news network had to release were marked \u201cAttorneys\u2019 Eyes Only,\u201d barring even the parties involved in the lawsuit from reading them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s a lot of lawyering to protect documents that other news organizations put online for all to view,\u201d wrote The Washington Post\u2019s Erik Wemple in 2018.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not clear how Chris Cuomo\u2019s actions are affected by the guidelines. Cuomo responded to the revelation regarding him and his brother, broken by The Washington Post, by offering an on-air apology to his viewers and colleagues. \u201cIt was a mistake,\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/watch-gov-andrew-cuomo-defends-receiving-political-advice-from-his-brother\">said<\/a>. \u201cI\u2019m truly sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cuomo also defended himself on the grounds that \u201cI\u2019ve never tried to influence this network\u2019s coverage of my brother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But he admits advising his brother, and those on the call told the Post that he guided his brother on how to respond to media questions \u2014 and the reporters he would know most intimately would be those on CNN.<\/p>\n<p>The network greeted the news by immediately announcing that Cuomo would suffer no consequences, although several of his colleagues complained about his actions publicly or privately.<\/p>\n<p>Brian Stelter, an inveterate critic of Fox News Channel and host of CNN\u2019s \u201cReliable Sources,\u201d called out Cuomo on the air.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Chris Cuomo wants to call into strategy sessions with his brother\u2019s aides, shouldn\u2019t he take a leave of absence from CNN?\u201d Stelter <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/brianstelter\/status\/1396501544028225536\">asked.<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"8.863309352518\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;If Chris Cuomo wants to call into strategy sessions with his brother&#8217;s aides, shouldn&#8217;t he take a leave of absence from CNN?&#8221; Here&#8217;s our conversation about the Cuomo brothers from today&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ReliableSources?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@ReliableSources<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/6nk0wbaFGN\">pic.twitter.com\/6nk0wbaFGN<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Brian Stelter (@brianstelter) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/brianstelter\/status\/1396501544028225536?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 23, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Jake Tapper also had scathing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/05\/27\/opinion\/sway-kara-swisher-jake-tapper.html?showTranscript=1\">words<\/a> for Cuomo\u2019s actions in the New York Times last Thursday. \u201cChris, in his apology that he delivered on air, said that he put us in a bad spot. And I would also agree with that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI work very hard to be fair and to be ethical and to not cross lines,\u201d he continued. \u201cWe all reflect on each other.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>CNN President Jeffrey Zucker <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2021\/05\/25\/no-special-rules-for-chris-cuomo-cnn-boss-jeff-zucker-insists-report\/\">responded<\/a> to their internal concerns last week by saying publicly that Chris Cuomo would not play by \u201cspecial rules.\u201d But as it turns out, that\u2019s because there are none.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose parameters should have been set up, publicized and followed from the very beginning,\u201d Matthew Hall, the SPJ president, <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/media\/554609-chris-cuomo-advised-brother-andrew-cuomo-on-handling-sexual-misconduct?utm_sq=gqqdqbery3&#038;utm_source=twitter&#038;utm_medium=social&#038;utm_campaign=spj-tweets&#038;utm_content=articles\">told<\/a> The Hill. \u201cThat they haven\u2019t been is a black eye for Chris Cuomo, CNN and the journalism industry as a whole.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>SPJ previously <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/spj_tweets\/status\/1375549471132676101\">insisted<\/a> CNN investigate Chris Cuomo over allegations that his brother gave him preferable access to COVID-19 tests during the early days of the pandemic.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"11.174785100287\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;CNN should investigate anchor Chris Cuomo &#038; he should publicly talk about allegations he received prioritized COVID-19 testing\u2014ordered by his brother, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo\u2014while reporting on the pandemic, said <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SDuncovered?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@SDuncovered<\/a>, national prez of SPJ.&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/yroxVjBAeV\">https:\/\/t.co\/yroxVjBAeV<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Society of Professional Journalists (@spj_tweets) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/spj_tweets\/status\/1375549471132676101?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 26, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Holmes said these repeated instances of public backlash should have given the network an impetus to adopt more rigorous ethical guidelines.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut what do they do when they don\u2019t do anything?
