Fauci\u00a0has since repeatedly stated the apparent importance of masks in relation to the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>Another email with the subject line \u201cMy take on masks\u201d from fellow bureaucrat Andrea Lerner, dated April 2021, has been nearly completely redacted, sparking some speculation online.<\/p>\n<p>Newsweek <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/fauci-emails-5-biggest-revelations-1596714\">reported<\/a> Tuesday on Fauci\u2019s email about surgical masks\u2019 ineffectiveness for the healthy, dated February 5, 2020:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"25.942953020134\">\n<p><em>In an email on February 5, 2020, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/fauci-said-masks-not-really-effective-keeping-out-virus-email-reveals-1596703\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fauci advised against wearing masks<\/a> and said that face masks bought in a store would not be effective at protecting against the virus. He was replying to queries from one Sylvia Burwell, who may be to the same Sylvia Burwell who served as secretary for health and human services from 2014 to 2017.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cMasks are really for infected people to prevent them from spreading infection to people who are not infected rather than protecting uninfected people from acquiring infection,\u201d Fauci wrote.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe typical mask you buy in the drug store is not really effective in keeping out virus, which is small enough to pass through material.
