Melanie Stansbury won the special election to succeed now-Interior Secretary Deb Haaland over her Republican opponent, according to preliminary results.<\/p>\n<p>Stansbury, an environmental consultant first elected in 2018, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2021\/06\/01\/us\/elections\/results-new-mexico-house-district-1-special-election.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">beat fellow state Rep. Mark Moores<\/a> to represent the state\u2019s 1st Congressional District by almost 25 points, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2021\/06\/01\/us\/elections\/results-new-mexico-house-district-1-special-election.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">according<\/a> to the New York Times election tracker. Though Stansbury was favored given the seat\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/cookpolitical.com\/analysis\/national\/pvi\/introducing-2021-cook-political-report-partisan-voter-index\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">liberal lean<\/a>, forecasters said her margin of victory was <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Redistrict\/status\/1399879077373304839\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">wider<\/a> than they expected when the race was called.<\/p>\n<p>Special elections, like those held earlier this year in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2021\/05\/05\/texas-6th-congressional-runoff\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Texas<\/a> and Louisiana, are often seen a primary test of each party\u2019s respective strength ahead of upcoming midterm elections.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" readability=\"5.2857142857143\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Thank you New Mexico! \u2764\ufe0f\u2764\ufe0f <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/p0VnZvAg66\">pic.twitter.com\/p0VnZvAg66<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Melanie Stansbury (@MelanieforNM) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MelanieforNM\/status\/1399927247838928897?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 2, 2021<\/a> <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Despite his loss, Moores consistently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kunm.org\/post\/mark-moores-his-run-congressional-seat\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">campaigned<\/a> on law enforcement and crime, an issue which some Democrats have attributed to the <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2020\/11\/05\/2022-house-democrats-concerns-pelosi-caucus-call-election-abigail-spanberger\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">party\u2019s recent congressional losses<\/a>. Moores repeatedly labeled Stansbury weak on crime, and campaigned on reversing Albuquerque\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.krqe.com\/krqe-plus\/data-reporting\/2021-albuquerque-homicide-rate-outpacing-previous-years-the-numbers-behind-the-rise\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">rising crime rate<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Stansbury\u2019s win gives House Democrats 220 seats once she is sworn in, helping pad their extremely slim majority. Republicans hold 211 seats following Ohio Rep. Steve Stivers\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/04\/19\/steve-stivers-announces-retire-congress-ohio\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">resignation<\/a> in May.&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/03\/15\/deb-haaland-confirmed-secretary-of-interior\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Haaland Confirmed As Interior Secretary)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Though Democrats have the majority, the upcoming <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2020\/11\/12\/redistricting-republicans-state-legislatures-2010-red-wave-2020-nancy-pelosi-house-of-representatives-election\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">decennial redistricting<\/a> and historical trends point to it being at tremendous risk ahead of the midterms.
