The combination has been dubbed a \u201cTrojan Horse,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heraldscotland.com\/news\/19339868.university-edinburgh-scientists-successfully-test-cancer-killing-trojan-horse-drug\/\" data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/www.heraldscotland.com\/news\/19339868.university-edinburgh-scientists-successfully-test-cancer-killing-trojan-horse-drug\/\">according<\/a> to The Herald.<\/p>\n<p>The study, which has been peer reviewed, used zebrafish and human cells. The scientists say more research needs to be conducted to see if it is a safe to treat\u00a0early-stage\u00a0cancer and even drug-resistant bacteria.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCancerous cells are \u2018greedy\u2019\u00a0and need to consume high amounts of food for energy and they typically ingest more than healthy cells, said the University of Edinburgh.\u00a0By coupling SeNBD with a chemical food compound it becomes the \u2018ideal prey for harmful cells\u2019\u00a0which ingest it \u2018without being alerted to its toxic nature,&#8217;\u201d the Herald reported.<\/p>\n<p>According to the scientists, SeNBD is a light-activated \u201cphotosensitizer,\u201d which means it kills cells when activated by light. Surgeons\u00a0could use the combo to target cancer cells only while leaving other healthy cells intact.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSwitching on the drug with light means a surgeon could decide exactly where they want the drug to be active, avoiding the chances of attacking healthy tissue and preventing the kind of side effects caused by other drugs,\u201d said the university.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCoupling the drug with a food compound is key to its success. For cells to survive, they must consume chemical components of food \u2013 known as metabolites \u2013 such as sugars and amino acids for energy,\u201d the university said in a press <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ed.ac.uk\/edinburgh-infectious-diseases\/news\/news\/light-sensitive-drug-acts-as-trojan-horse\">release<\/a>.\u00a0Bacterial and cancer cells \u201cconsume higher concentrations and different types of metabolites than healthy cells. Pairing SeNBD with a metabolite makes it ideal prey for harmful cells.\u00a0Until now, most light-activated drugs have been bigger than metabolites, which means bacteria and cancer cells do not recognize them as normal food.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis research represents an important advance in the design of new therapies that can be simply activated by light irradiation, which is generally very safe,\u201d said lead researcher Professor Marc Vendrell, chairman of translational chemistry and Biomedical Imaging at the university.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeNBD is one of the smallest photosensitizers ever made and its use as a \u2018Trojan horse\u2019 opens many new opportunities in interventional medicine for killing harmful cells without affecting surrounding healthy tissue,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Another researcher, Dr. Sam Benson, said the way the drug works is that it is delivered through the \u201cfront door of the cell.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith SeNBD, we can combine a light activated\u00a0drug with the food that cancerous and bacterial cells normally eat.
