This campaign began after Phares Lee, a biological woman who is transgender, asked to have their \u201cdeadname\u201d removed from their badge while employed by a subcontracting security firm to work at a Google data center in South Carolina. Their request was denied.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Addressed to Google\u2019s Chief Diversity Officer, On-site Google Security Manager and Site Operations Manager, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dropthedeadnames.org\/#petition\"><span>petition<\/span><\/a><span> began, \u201cWe believe Google and G4S must build a better workplace. That means creating a workforce that is more representative of our users, and a workplace that creates a sense of belonging for everyone.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWe believe Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) are vital for providing community, personal, and professional development opportunities for Googlers from underrepresented communities,\u201d the petition continued. \u201cTherefore, we believe that Google and G4S must make the following immediate corrective actions:\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The campaign then listed five \u201ccorrective actions.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><em><span>Issue a valid ID badge to \u201cPhares Lee\u201d instead of only accepting the one with his dead name on it.<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><em><span>Cease reverting his preferred name to his dead name after Phares attempts to update it within Google\u2019s online systems (Teams\/MOMA).\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><em><span>Communicate to all temporary, vendor, and contract workers (TVCs) that they are free and able to meet with ERGs during office hours and events during their working time\u2014the same as Google full-time employees (FTEs).\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><em><span>Communicate to all TVCs that they are also permitted to communicate and participate with ERGs during non-working time\u2014the same as Google FTEs.<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><em><span>Create a \u201cChosen Name Policy\u201d that covers all FTEs and TVCs alike; ensures publicly displayed names reflect a chosen name where it differs from their legal name; allows pronoun stickers to be displayed on name badges, and protects the right to privacy of dead names.\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span>\u201cI\u2019ve been facing workplace issues that feel like discrimination to my gender identity, but it\u2019s not just about me as an individual. Google and G4S need to make changes so that no one else has to go through what I\u2019ve had to\u201d said Lee, according to the petition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In addition to signing the petition, viewers are encouraged to \u201cWear a \u2018Hello my name is\u2019 sticker to work,\u201d or \u201cPost a selfie in solidarity\u201d with the hashtag, #DropTheDeadnames.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cFor Lee, Google\u2019s value of a \u2018workplace that creates a sense of belonging for everyone\u2019 has not been extended to TVCs (Google\u2019s term for temps, vendors, and contractors) like him,\u201d the campaign explains. \u201cHe has requested repeatedly to remove his deadname from his name badge, only to be denied. He repeatedly changed his deadname to his chosen name on Google\u2019s Teams\/MOMA, only to have it revert to his deadname. Finally, he was told he\u2019s not even allowed to talk to corporate-created Employee Resource Groups which were set up to support underrepresented communities.\u00a0 None of this \u2018<\/span><b><i>creates a sense of belonging<\/i><\/b><span>.\u2019\u201d (Emphasis added by campaign).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Deadnaming is a term used to describe the use of a transgender person\u2019s birth or former name, often without the person\u2019s \u201cconsent.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>As of Tuesday afternoon, the petition had 345 signatories.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span>The Daily Wire is one of America\u2019s fastest-growing conservative media companies and counter-cultural outlets for news, opinion, and entertainment.
