Eleanor Holmes Norton introduced a bill Tuesday that would require car crash test dummies to use both male and female models.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWomen have achieved equality on the road when it comes to driving, but when it comes to safety testing to keep them safe on the road, they are nowhere near achieving equality,\u201d Norton said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/norton.house.gov\/media-center\/press-releases\/norton-announces-bill-to-require-gender-equality-in-crash-test-dummies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">statement<\/a>. \u201cCrash test standards are incredibly antiquated, and we must update these standards now, especially as more people return to their daily commute in the next few months.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Norton, who chairs the Subcommittee on Highways and Transit, noted the federal government uses crash test dummies based on male bodies and car companies are not required to use female models.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMore important than differences in average height between males and females, there are also biological differences in anatomy, such as average neck strength and posture, that affect how female and male bodies react in a crash,\u201d Norton\u2019s office said in a statement. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/03\/29\/acft-shaina-coss-lowering-standards-us-army-gender-equality-inclusiveness-wrong\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: \u2018True Equality Comes From Real Achievement\u2019: Female Army Ranger Says Lowering Standards For Military Women Is A Mistake)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Car companies still typically use a <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2020\/12\/10\/report-children-booster-seats-danger\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">dummy<\/a> modeled off of the 50th percentile male, which was standardized in the 1970\u2019s, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.consumerreports.org\/car-safety\/crash-test-bias-how-male-focused-testing-puts-female-drivers-at-risk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Consumer Reports<\/a>. The dummy is a 171-pound, five-foot nine-inch male, even though the average male today is 26 pounds heavier, according to the report. (Bill Pugliano\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Female drivers and passengers are roughly 17% more likely to be killed in a car crash than a male occupant of the same age, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/crashstats.nhtsa.dot.gov\/Api\/Public\/ViewPublication\/811766\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">report<\/a> from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFemales are not just smaller versions of males,\u201d co-scientific director of the Center for Injury Research and Prevention at the Children\u2019s Hospital of Philadelphia Kristy Abrogast said, according to Consumer Reports. \u201cThey\u2019re put together differently. Their material properties\u2013their structure\u2013 is different.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The NHTSA does have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhtsa.gov\/nhtsas-crash-test-dummies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">two female crash dummies<\/a>, one which represents the 5th percentile adult female who is four-feet eleven-inches and weighs 108 pounds, and a \u201csmall adult female\u201d with the same height but weighing only 97 pounds.<\/p>\n<p>But Consumer Reports notes the dummies do not take into account \u201cthe biological differences between male and female bodies\u201d and that in frontal crash tests performed using the 5th percentile female dummy, the dummy rides as a passenger rather than the driver\u2019s seat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe reality of progress in automotive safety is that it heavily relies on regulation,\u201d Automotive Safety Engineer at Consumer Reports\u2019 Auto Test Center Emily Thomas said. \u201cUnless the federal motor vehicle safety standards require dynamic crash testing with average-sized female crash dummies in multiple seating positions, driver side included, the dummy industry and automakers won\u2019t make that leap themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Democratic Washington, D.C., Rep.
