He asked viewers to contrast that \u201cwith the steep and then steady murder decline America saw between 1991 and 2014.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The violence is far from over, he warned. \u201cThe spike in homicides and assaults continued in the first quarter of this year. Not only that, the number of police officers who have been shot in the line of duty stand at 141 as of May 16, and 24 officer fatalities this year is the most year to date since 2018.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That merely scratches the surface of America\u2019s intensifying war with itself. &nbsp;National Public Radio recently&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2021\/01\/06\/953254623\/massive-1-year-rise-in-homicide-rates-collided-with-the-pandemic-in-2020\">reported<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"11\">\n<p><em>At the end of 2020, Chicago police reported more than 750 murders, a jump of more than 50% compared with 2019. By mid-December, Los Angeles saw a 30% increase over the previous year with 322 homicides. There were 437 homicides in New York City by Dec. 20, nearly 40% more than the previous year.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Avlon told his viewers, \u201cYou\u2019d be forgiven for asking, what the hell is going on here?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He blamed a \u201cperfect storm\u201d of factors, including \u201cthe prevalence of guns\u201d but also economic contractions brought on by the COVID-19 lockdowns that have lingered into this year in some areas. He also cited \u201cthe release of criminal defendants due to COVID concerns in jail\u201d \u2014 although many of these were not \u201cdefendants\u201d but prisoners with <a href=\"https:\/\/stream.org\/the-great-coronavirus-jailbreak\/\">records<\/a> of such crimes as sexual offenses and murder.<\/p>\n<p>Avlon also blamed expanded crime on \u201cthe overall reallocation of police resources,\u201d that is, defunding the police.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLos Angeles recently changed course after cutting its police department by $150 million last July,\u201d he said. \u201cNow its mayor is proposing increased funding after a 38 percent spike in murders last year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He did not mention the riots associated with \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/msnbc-people-only-think-blm-riots-were-violent-because-of-fox-news-newsmax-oan-bubble\">mostly peaceful protests<\/a>\u201d held by Black Lives Matter, which may have inflicted $2 billion in property damage and claimed dozens of lives, including retired African American policeman David Dorn.<\/p>\n<p>Avlon\u2019s report itself could have made history as one of CNN\u2019s rare references to violence, aside from its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/05\/27\/politics\/tulsa-massacre-race-2021-deconstructed-newsletter\/index.html\">perpetual focus<\/a> on the 100-year-old Tulsa Massacre.<\/p>\n<p>This week, Fox News host Tucker Carlson highlighted the spike in violence which began last May, but he dismissed the notion that COVID-19 accounted for it. He noted that crime fell in nations around the world, including Canada, the UK, Sweden and Russia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven in Mexico, there were fewer homicides in 2020 than there were in 2019. So, for normal countries \u2014 pretty much all countries \u2014 the pandemic meant more Netflix, but less killing,\u201d he said on Thursday night.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot here. In the United States, the opposite happened,\u201d he said. \u201cA lot of Netflix, even more killing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said the difference is that, in the U.S., \u201c=the Democratic Party took full control of the country, and their policies resulted in a huge number of killings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Avlon may be the only person situated to point out these uncomfortable facts on CNN. Avlon, a centrist who helped <a href=\"http:\/\/therightswriter.com\/2010\/12\/rinos-plan-a-third-party\/\">launch<\/a> the \u201cNo Labels\u201d movement, previously served as former speechwriter and policy adviser to former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani.<\/p>\n<p>Giuliani\u2019s famously tough-on-crime policies caused crime to fall in New York City after years of increase under Democratic Mayor David Dinkins.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNew York City has been transformed from the nation\u2019s crime capital to the safest large city in the United States. As a result, New Yorkers in every neighborhood feel safer in their homes and in their communities,\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/html\/om\/html\/98b\/pr310-98.html\">said<\/a> Giuliani in 1998.<\/p>\n<p>Murders <a href=\"https:\/\/www.disastercenter.com\/crime\/nycrime.htm\">fell by 60%<\/a> during Giuliani\u2019s tenure in office, 1993 to 2001.<\/p>\n<p>His son, Andrew, has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/rudy-giuliani-son-andrew-announces-2022-bid-to-challenge-cuomo-as-ny-gov\">announced<\/a> he is running for governor of New York against incumbent Andrew Cuomo.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Daily Wire is one of America\u2019s fastest-growing conservative media companies and counter-cultural outlets for news, opinion, and entertainment.
