(JOHANNES EISELE\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h5>OAN Newsroom<br \/>UPDATED 11:08 AM PT \u2013 Saturday, May 29, 2021<\/h5>\n<p>On Friday, Customs and Border Protection issued a withhold <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbp.gov\/newsroom\/national-media-release\/cbp-issues-withhold-release-order-chinese-fishing-fleet\">release order<\/a> for any goods that come from Dalian Ocean Fishing Company Limited, due to their use of forced labor.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/asia\/se-asia\/indonesian-crew-go-without-pay-as-chinese-fishing-vessel-case-drags-on\">Straits Times<\/a> ran a story detailing the tragic conditions crewmen faced aboard one of Dalian\u2019s boats. It further detailed their experiences with wage withholding and abuse, which resulted in international scrutiny. While CBP has issued WRO\u2019s for individual vessels before, officials said the scope of the allegations mandated larger action.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">CBP has issued a Withhold Release Order against Dalian Ocean Fishing Co., Ltd. based on info indicating the use of forced labor in its fishing operations, including physical violence, withholding of wages, and abusive working &amp; living conditions.<\/p>\n<p>RELEASE: <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/dJvwVwtEXL\">https:\/\/t.co\/dJvwVwtEXL<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/dH7wfgbjsW\">pic.twitter.com\/dH7wfgbjsW<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 CBP (@CBP) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CBP\/status\/1398314388327698434?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 28, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>John Leonard, the acting executive assistant commissioner of the agency\u2019s Office of Trade said, \u201cso we determined that this entire fleet, which is based out of Dalian, China, has been committing these forced labor infractions. Basically almost enslaving employees, many of whom come from Indonesia, under these conditions\u2026and it really affected the whole fleet, really all 32 vessels. So that\u2019s why we took this rather sweeping action.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leonard explained how forced labor is a serious problem and something that has yet to disappear. Therefore, there must be consequences for it. He claimed this could be an ongoing effort for the CBP because the plan is to issue withhold release orders whenever and wherever situations arise that involve forced labor.
