In their \u201cOur Commitment to Human Rights\u201d document, they declare that they \u201cfeel a deep sense of responsibility to make technology for people that respects their human rights, empowers them with useful tools and information, and enhances their overall quality of life.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWe do that with our \u2014 setting the industry standard for minimizing personal data collection. We build privacy protections into everything we make \u2014 from products like iPhone, to services like Apple Pay, to our comprehensive review process for every app on the App Store,\u201d the <a href=\"https:\/\/s2.q4cdn.com\/470004039\/files\/doc_downloads\/gov_docs\/Apple-Human-Rights-Policy.pdf\">document<\/a> continues.&nbsp;<\/span><span>\u201cHand in hand with the privacy of our users is our commitment to freedom of information and expression. Our products help our customers communicate, learn, express their creativity, and exercise their ingenuity. We believe in the critical importance of an open society in which information flows freely, and we\u2019re convinced the best way we can continue to promote openness is to remain engaged, even where we may disagree with a country\u2019s laws.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>However, according to a bombshell report from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/05\/17\/technology\/apple-china-censorship-data.html\"><span>The New York Times<\/span><\/a><span>, Apple\u2019s self-proclaimed quest for privacy doesn\u2019t apply when it comes to users of its products and services in China.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>According to the report, Apple plans to store user data at centers in Guiyang, China \u2014 and another in the Inner Mongolia region \u2014 after largely ceding \u201ccontrol to the Chinese government.\u201d This involves Chinese state management of the computers, the abandonment of encryption technology not permitted by the Chinese regime, and \u201cdigital keys that unlock information on those computers\u201d being held in the very \u201cdata centers they\u2019re meant to secure.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cBut to stay on the right side of Chinese regulators, his company has put the data of its Chinese customers at risk and has aided government censorship in the Chinese version of its App Store,\u201d the report said of Tim Cook, Apple\u2019s CEO.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The report also details claims by current and former employees of the Silicon Valley giant that Cook \u201cultimately approved the plans to store customer data on Chinese servers and to aggressively censor apps\u201d on the Apple \u201cApp Store.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cApple has become a cog in the censorship machine that presents a government-controlled version of the internet,\u201d said Nicholas Bequelin, Asia director for the human rights group, Amnesty International. \u201cIf you look at the behavior of the Chinese government, you don\u2019t see any resistance from Apple \u2014 no history of standing up for the principles that Apple claims to be so attached to.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>On the subject of \u201cfree speech,\u201d Apple reportedly \u201cproactively censors its Chinese App Store, relying on software and employees to flag and block apps that Apple managers worry could run afoul of Chinese officials, according to interviews and court documents.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span> Among the tens of thousands of censored apps include \u201cforeign news outlets, gay dating services and encrypted messaging apps,\u201d as well as \u201ctools for organizing pro-democracy protests and skirting internet restrictions, as well as apps about the Dalai Lama.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cAnd in its data centers, Apple\u2019s compromises have made it nearly impossible for the company to stop the Chinese government from gaining access to the emails, photos, documents, contacts and locations of millions of Chinese residents, according to the security experts and Apple engineers,\u201d the Times added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Despite the tech giant\u2019s \u201c<\/span><span>Commitment to Human Rights,\u201d <\/span><span>its financial relationship with China apparently outweighs its \u201ccommitment\u201d to the comparatively unimportant notions of \u201cprivacy\u201d and \u201cfreedom of expression.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span>Ian Haworth is an Editor and Writer for The Daily Wire.
