But we know that it won\u2019t happen on its own. Every day, we work to infuse the devices we make with the humanity that makes us.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><span>These words are from Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple, and are printed at the beginning of the corporation\u2019s \u201cCommitment to Human Rights\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/s2.q4cdn.com\/470004039\/files\/doc_downloads\/gov_docs\/Apple-Human-Rights-Policy.pdf\"><span>document<\/span><\/a><span>. But while the tech giant touts its supposed steadfast commitment to protecting human rights,&nbsp;Apple has been widely criticized for various labor and human rights violations in its global supply chain. So what\u2019s the truth about Apple\u2019s record on human rights?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What does Apple claim?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>In the first section of the document, titled \u201cPeople Come First,\u201d Apple states that the company\u2019s \u201crespect for human rights begins with our commitment to treating everyone with dignity and respect.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWe believe in the power of technology to empower and connect people around the world\u2014 and that business can and should be a force for good. Achieving that takes innovation, hard work, and a focus on serving others,\u201d the Big Tech company declares. \u201cIt also means leading with our values. Our human rights policy governs how we treat everyone\u2014from our customers and teams to our business partners and people at every level of our supply chain.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWith humility, optimism, and an abiding faith in people, we\u2019re committed to respecting the human rights of everyone whose lives we touch,\u201d the document adds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In the following section, titled, \u201cOur Commitment to Human Rights,\u201d the company states that they\u2019ve \u201cworked hard to embed a respect for human rights across our company \u2014 in the technology we make, in the way we make it, and in how we treat people.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Under a subheading \u201cThe Technology We Make,\u201d Apple writes, \u201cAs a global technology company, we feel a deep sense of responsibility to make technology for people that respects their human rights, empowers them with useful tools and information, and enhances their overall quality of life.\u201d According to the corporation, they achieve this by making \u201cquality products, including content and services, available to our users in a way that respects their human rights.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Under the next subheading, \u201cThe Way We Make It,\u201d Apple continues, \u201cRespect for human rights shapes how we make our products and services. Our responsibilities go beyond our stores and corporate offices: They extend to our supply chain, the communities we\u2019re a part of, and the planet we all share.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cAcross our supply chain,\u201d Apple claims, \u201cwe work hand in hand with our suppliers to ensure that every workplace provides a safe and respectful environment for everyone.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIf a company is not willing or able to meet our high standards, we will no longer do business with them,\u201d they state.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In the final sub-heading, \u201cHow We Treat People,\u201d the Big Tech giant writes, \u201cWe\u2019ve always said Apple\u2019s soul is our people,\u201d adding that\u2019s why they are \u201ccommitted to respecting the human rights of everyone whose lives we touch \u2014 including our employees, suppliers, contractors, and customers.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cAt Apple and throughout our supply chain, we prohibit harassment, discrimination, violence, and retaliation of any kind \u2014 and we have zero tolerance for violations motivated by any form of prejudice or bigotry,\u201d the document adds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Finally, in a section titled, \u201cOur Commitment to International Human Rights Standards,\u201d the company claims to be \u201cdeeply committed to respecting internationally recognized human rights in our business operations, as set out in the United Nations International Bill of Human Rights and the International Labour Organization\u2019s Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWe conduct human rights due diligence to identify risks and work to mitigate them. We seek to remedy adverse impacts, track and measure our progress, and report our findings,\u201d Apple concludes. \u201cWe believe that dialogue and engagement are the best ways to work toward building a better world. In keeping with the UN Guiding Principles, where national law and international human rights standards differ, we follow the higher standard. Where they are in conflict, we respect national law while seeking to respect the principles of internationally recognized human rights.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What is the truth?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>Apple has been widely criticized on multiple occasions for various labor and human rights violations in its global supply chain. In 2018, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/apple-human-rights-violations-supply-chain-double-year-reports-reveals-836247\"><span>Newsweek<\/span><\/a><span> reported that the number of such violations \u201cdoubled in the span of a year.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><span>According to the company\u2019s Supplier Responsibility Progress Report, several \u201ccore violations\u201d were discovered \u201cfollowing an audit of the working conditions of its supply chain employees across 30 countries.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cAbuses included labor violations, the falsification of working hours, harassment and underage staff. Apple conducted 756 audits in total and its report detailed some of the violations that were considered to be \u2018serious breaches of compliance,\u2019\u201d noted Newsweek.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In December 2020, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2020\/12\/29\/lens-technology-apple-uighur\/\"><span>The Washington Post<\/span><\/a><span> reported that \u201c<\/span><span>One of the oldest and most well-known iPhone suppliers has been accused of using forced Muslim labor in its factories,\u201d according to documents discovered and shared by human rights group, Tech Transparency Project.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>According to the exclusive report, \u201cthousands of Uighur workers from the predominantly Muslim region of Xinjiang were sent to work for Lens Technology.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cLens Technology is one of at least five companies connected to Apple\u2019s supply chain that have now been linked to alleged forced labor from the Xinjiang region, according to human rights groups,\u201d the Post noted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Katie Paul, director of the Tech Transparency Project, said that \u201c<\/span><span>Our research shows that Apple\u2019s use of forced labor in its supply chain goes far beyond what the company has acknowledged.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Earlier that month, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/appleinsider.com\/articles\/20\/12\/18\/coalition-demands-apple-take-more-action-to-defend-human-rights#:~:text=Apple&#039;s%20human%20rights%20policies%20have,probe%20of%20its%20supply%20chain.\"><span>Apple Insider<\/span><\/a><span> reported that \u2014 despite saying that the corporation had \u201c<\/span><span>no evidence of human rights violations in a probe of its supply chain\u201d \u2014 Apple cut ties with O-Film, \u201cone of the firms accused of using forced labor.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The issue of alleged forced labor in Apple\u2019s supply chain appears to continue into 2021. According to The Information, as reported by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2021\/5\/10\/22428899\/apple-suppliers-china-uyghur-forced-labor-report\"><span>The Verge<\/span><\/a><span>, \u201c<\/span><span>the publication identified seven companies that supplied products or services to Apple and supported forced labor programs, according to statements made by the Chinese government,\u201d adding that the programs \u201ctarget the country\u2019s Muslim minority population, particularly Uyghurs living in Xinjiang.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>According to The Information, Apple was supplied with \u201cantennas, cables, and coatings, among other products and services\u201d by these companies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Accusations of human rights abuses are not limited to Asian supply chains. In May 2021, for example, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/utah\/2021\/5\/23\/22441889\/our-children-are-dying-like-dogs-congo-slave-labor-cobalt-lawsuit-apple-tesla-human-rights-dell\"><span>Deseret News<\/span><\/a><span> reported on a group of parents who are \u201c<\/span><span>part of a class-action lawsuit filed in U.S. federal court in Washington, D.C., in 2019 seeking to hold Apple\u201d and other Big Tech companies \u201caccountable for what they allege is profiting off the misery of child labor in their quest for cobalt,\u201d after children reportedly died while \u201cworking the cobalt mines in the Democratic Republic of Congo.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>While companies are pushing to have the case dismissed, the lawsuit \u201cinsists companies are simply turning a blind eye to the egregious abuses that include children killed in tunnel collapses or losing limbs or suffering from other horrific injuries caused by mining accidents.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cCobalt is a key component of every rechargeable lithium-ion battery in all of the gadgets made by defendants and all other tech and electric car companies in the world,\u201d the suit explains.<\/p>\n<p><i><span>Ian Haworth is an Editor and Writer for The Daily Wire.
