The outlet <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/usa-today-removes-references-to-transgender-athletes-as-male-in-high-school-track-stars-op-ed-calls-it-hurtful-language\">edited<\/a> Mitchell\u2019s piece Wednesday, removing and replacing instances where Mitchell referred to transgender competitor\u2019s as \u201cmale\u201d or alluded to their male physiques.<\/p>\n<p>USA Today explained in an editor\u2019s note that the language was \u201churtful.\u201d The post-publication edits and justification earned the outlet condemnations online.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOutrageous. @usatoday changed Mitchell\u2019s words, post-publication, on the grounds that the word \u2018male\u2019 is hurtful,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AbigailShrier\/status\/1397740272436400128\">said<\/a> Abigail Shrier, author of \u201cIrreversible Damage: The Transgender Craze Seducing Our Daughters.\u201d \u201cThe activists know well that Mitchell can\u2019t make her argument without that word. Shame on the useful idiots of USAToday. If only they had half Mitchell\u2019s courage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>RealClearInvestigations senior writer Mark Hemingway <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Heminator\/status\/1397732557077237762\">said<\/a>: \u201cAbsolutely incredible. You literally can\u2019t make an argument in corporate media with conceding to the terms set by the left.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Attorney and podcaster Jeff Blehar <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/EsotericCD\/status\/1397878315155918848\">wrote<\/a>: \u201cI find it absolutely insane that any news organization that values its journalistic reputation would go back and change an *op-Ed* after publication for any reason outside of explicit legal liability, which 1.) you have in-house lawyers for pre-publication; 2.) this sure ain\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Casey Mattox, vice president for legal and judicial strategy at Americans for Prosperity, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CaseyMattox_\/status\/1397737310800723968\">stated<\/a> simply: \u201cEmbarrassingly poor form by @USAToday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mitchell is being represented by the Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), a conservative legal nonprofit, in her case against the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference to bar transgender females from girls\u2019 sports. ADF attorney Christiana Holcomb also blasted USA Today for changing Mitchell\u2019s op-ed days later.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c@USATODAY published our client Chelsea Mitchell\u2019s opinion about the unfairness she experienced being forced to compete against male athletes. But after backlash from the woke mob, editors unilaterally changed Chelsea\u2019s words &amp; called them \u2018hurtful language,\u2019\u201d Holcomb&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ChristianaADF\/status\/1397610845761425410\">wrote<\/a>&nbsp;on Twitter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was the \u2018hurtful language\u2019 that editors deleted from Chelsea\u2019s opinion piece three days after publication? The word \u2018male,\u2019\u201d she continued. \u201cUSA Today violated its principles to appease the mob. This blatant censorship violates the trust we place in media to be honest brokers of public debate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>USA Today changed Mitchell\u2019s language throughout the article, removing any reference to transgender females as \u201cmale.\u201d Mitchell\u2019s opening paragraphs reflect multiple changes in wording. Mitchell\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/adflegal.org\/blog\/i-was-fastest-girl-connecticut-transgender-athletes-made-it-unfair-fight\">original article<\/a> said:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"28\">\n<p><em>It\u2019s February 2020. I\u2019m crouched at the starting line of the high school girls\u2019 55-meter indoor race. This should be one of the best days of my life. I\u2019m running in the state championship, and I\u2019m ranked the fastest high school female in the 55-meter dash in the state. I should be feeling confident. I should know that I have a strong shot at winning.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Instead, all I can think about is how all my training, everything I\u2019ve done to maximize my performance, might not be enough, simply because there\u2019s a runner on the line with an enormous physical advantage: a male body.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>I won that race, and I\u2019m grateful. But time after time, I have lost. I\u2019ve lost four women\u2019s state championship titles, two all-New England awards, and numerous other spots on the podium to male runners. I was bumped to third place in the 55-meter dash in 2019, behind two male runners.
