Version: 4.0.47--><div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Warren.jpg?w=1200&amp;h=800&amp;ixlib=react-9.0.3\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\" \/><\/div>\n<p><span>Senate Democrats expressed skepticism Thursday toward the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/republicans-counter-biden-with-928-billion-plan-for-actual-infrastructure\"><span>Republican infrastructure counter-offer<\/span><\/a><span>, a $928 billion spending plan that would draw the majority of its funding from unspent COVID-19 relief and other forms of non-new spending, arguing that the GOP proposal was not nearly enough to meet the demands of the moment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The GOP proposal was likely to meet opposition from Democrats \u2014 who have gone so far as to refer to \u201ccare economy\u201d spending as infrastructure \u2014 precisely because it rebuked attempts to redefine the word beyond what Americans have long considered to be infrastructure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>But criticism from a number of Senate Democrats suggests that some of them believe the Republican counter-offer isn\u2019t even worthy of consideration.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t really think this is a serious counter-offer,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RuhleOnMSNBC\/status\/1397914226816020483?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1397914226816020483%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.businessinsider.com%2Felizabeth-warren-gop-infrastructure-plan-leaves-out-women-2021-5\">said<\/a> Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), who raised concerns about how the plan would be paid for and about the lack of \u201cgreen infrastructure\u201d in the proposal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is our chance to expand our idea of what infrastructure means,\u201d she added later.<\/p>\n<p><span>Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH), who in March <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SenSherrodBrown\/status\/1369813816981282822\">endorsed<\/a> ending the filibuster if the GOP <\/span><span>\u201cstand in the way of progress,\u201d said negotiations were going too slowly, and were making it seem as if Republicans were engaging reasonably, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2021\/05\/27\/republicans-infrastructure-counter-491153\">reports<\/a> POLITICO.&nbsp;<\/span><span>\u201cThey haven\u2019t been yet,\u201d he added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI fully understand the president\u2019s instinctive desire for a bipartisan solution and that would be the best of all worlds but it takes two to tango,\u201d said Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), reports POLITICO. \u201cAnd so far they really refuse to come to the dance floor.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Republican lawmakers argued Thursday that the proposal specifically targets infrastructure, and does so without creating unnecessary levels of new spending at a time when spending has reached exorbitant levels.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWe want to focus on actual infrastructure,\u201d said Senator Pat Toomey (R-PA), one of the Republicans who helped craft the counter-offer. \u201cThe platforms and services that move people and goods and services through our economy, that\u2019s what people understand to be infrastructure, and we can reach an agreement if we focus on those items.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>President Biden told reporters earlier Thursday that he had not yet reviewed the Republican proposal. In a statement, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki thanked the senators for the counter-offer \u2014 even expressing approval for parts of it \u2014 but suggested that it was still well-short of receiving a final stamp of approval from the Biden administration.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Specifically, Psaki said the proposal lacks new spending for fixing \u201c<\/span><span>veterans\u2019 hospitals, building modern rail systems, repairing our transit systems, removing dangerous lead pipes, and powering America\u2019s leadership in a job-creating clean energy economy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cLastly, we are concerned that the proposal on how to pay for the plan remains unclear: we are worried that major cuts in COVID relief funds could imperil pending aid to small businesses, restaurants, and rural hospitals using this money to get back on their feet after the crush of the pandemic,\u201d Psaki said in the statement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollcall.com\/2021\/05\/27\/republican-infrastructure-plan\/\"><span>Roll Call<\/span><\/a><span>, Biden said Thursday that he plans to meet with Republican lawmakers next week to discuss the infrastructure counter-offer.
