Lightfoot never responded to multiple requests for an interview, and earlier this month announced that she would only grant interviews to \u201cblack and brown\u201d reporters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn May 20, 2021, Plaintiff Catenacci requested, by email, a one-on-one interview with Mayor Lightfoot,\u201d says the lawsuit, filed in United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, Eastern Division. \u201cPlaintiff Catenacci sent a follow-up email on May 21, 2021. He also sent a third email on May 24, 2021.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs of the date of this Complaint, Mayor Lightfoot\u2019s office has not responded to Plaintiff Catenacci\u2019s request nor has Mayor Lightfoot agreed to an interview with Plaintiff Catenacci,\u201d the suit continues.<\/p>\n<p>The DCNF reported: \u201cLightfoot denied Catenacci\u2019s request by \u2018failing to respond in a timely manner,\u2019 the lawsuit said, noting that \u2018on information and belief,\u2019 Lightfoot is aware that Catenacci is \u2018not a journalist of color.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit alleges that Lightfoot violated Catenacci\u2019s First Amendment and Fourteenth Amendment rights. DCNF Editor-in-Chief Ethan Barton slammed Lightfoot for refusing an interview with his reporter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s absurd that an elected official believes she can discriminate on the basis of race,\u201d Barton said. \u201cMayor Lightfoot\u2019s decision is clearly blocking press freedom through racial discrimination.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The DCNF partnered with nonprofit watchdog group Judicial Watch to bring the lawsuit against Lightfoot. Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton said Lightfoot\u2019s behavior is \u201cflagrantly illegal and immoral.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRacial discrimination has no place in America, especially in the halls of government,\u201d Fitton said. \u201cMayor Lightfoot\u2019s admitted policy of race-based discrimination is flagrantly illegal and immoral. Simply put, we\u2019re asking the court to find Mayor Lightfoot\u2019s racist abuse unlawful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Over Twitter, Catenacci said he looks \u201cforward to holding [Lightfoot] accountable.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"10.356666666667\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Some personal news.<\/p>\n<p>I, along with <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DailyCaller?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@DailyCaller<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JudicialWatch?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@JudicialWatch<\/a>, am suing Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot for racial discrimination. Lightfoot later <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/lori-lightfoot-defends-giving-interviews-only-to-black-and-brown-journalists-calls-press-overwhelmingly-white\">confirmed<\/a> the accusations and defended her attempt to combat the \u201coverwhelming whiteness and maleness\u201d of the press corps.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn looking at the absence of diversity across the City Hall press corps and other newsrooms, sadly it does not appear that many of the media institutions in Chicago have caught on and truly have not embraced this moment,\u201d Lightfoot wrote in a letter to the media explaining her discriminatory policy. \u201cI have been struck since my first day on the campaign trail back in 2018 by the overwhelming whiteness and maleness of Chicago media outlets, editorial boards, the political press corps, and yes, the City Hall press corps specifically.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I as the black woman mayor, the first-ever, don\u2019t challenge us, the collective us, to do better, to really make sure that in every institution it reflects the diversity, nuance, and texture, then shame on me,\u201d she continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis isn\u2019t my job. It shouldn\u2019t be,\u201d she said. \u201cI don\u2019t have time for it. But as with so many festering problems, it has only gotten worse with time.
