Josh Hawley (R-MO) protested the sale, appearing to argue that it violates monopoly laws.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">\u201cThis sale should not go through. <\/span><span class=\"r-18u37iz\">@amazon <\/span>is already a monopoly platform that owns e-commerce, shipping, groceries &amp; the cloud. They shouldn\u2019t be permitted to buy anything else. Period. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/YyOdQ6iWPQ\">https:\/\/t.co\/YyOdQ6iWPQ<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Josh Hawley (@HawleyMO) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/HawleyMO\/status\/1397542482720735235?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 26, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2021\/5\/26\/22441644\/amazon-mgm-acquisition-prime-video-subscription-service-james-bond\">The Verge<\/a>, Amazon will now own \u201c4,000 films and 17,000 hours of TV\u201d as a result of the acquisition, allowing it to compete with the likes of Netflix and Disney+ as the streaming wars continue throughout the decade.<\/p>\n<p id=\"meMfR2\">\u201cMGM is perhaps most notable for being the Hollywood studio behind the James Bond and Rocky franchises, but its library runs the gamut from classic films like <em>12 Angry Men<\/em>&nbsp;to modern TV shows like&nbsp;<em>The Handmaid\u2019s Tale&nbsp;<\/em>and&nbsp;<em>Vikings<\/em>,\u201d reported The Verge. \u201cMGM\u2019s library also includes unscripted TV shows like <em>The Voice&nbsp;<\/em>and<em>&nbsp;Shark Tank<\/em>. Amazon says the acquisition will \u2018provide customers with greater access\u2019 to MGM\u2019s works and \u2019empower\u2019 the studio to continue its \u2018great storytelling.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmazon\u2019s media business has so far been a relatively small part of its overall empire, although it still spends billions on content each year. A substantial portion of Prime subscribers make use of the included free Prime Video streaming,\u201d it continued. \u201cOf the 200 million-plus people worldwide who are currently subscribed to Amazon Prime, over 175 million streamed video last year. Adding thousands more films and TV shows could be a boon for both figures.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mike Hopkins, senior vice president of Prime Video and Amazon Studios, said that Amazon will continue to enrich the \u201ctreasure trove\u201d of IP in MGM\u2019s catalog.<\/p>\n<p id=\"Hj5th0\">\u201cThe real financial value behind this deal is the treasure trove of IP in the deep catalog that we plan to reimagine and develop together with MGM\u2019s talented team,\u201d Hopkins said. \u201cIt\u2019s very exciting and provides so many opportunities for high-quality storytelling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>People on social media had mixed opinions about Hawley\u2019s tweet. Those in favor of the sale argued that Amazon was simply trying to compete with behemoth media empire conglomerates.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI generally agree with you on most issues but I am not concerned about Amazon \u2018monopolizing\u2019 film production\/distribution. There seems to be an awful lot of competition in that field. Let\u2019s keep the government out of things to the extent possible,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Patrick92641659\/status\/1397543054098288644?s=20\">one user<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMonopoly?
