Ted Cruz said. \u201cThe AR-15 is one of, if not the most popular rifle in America.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIt\u2019s not a machine gun, it\u2019s a rifle,\u201d Cruz continued. \u201cYour public position is that you want to ban AR-15s, is that correct?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cSenator, thank you for the question, and thank you for our visit yesterday, and offering me a Dr. Pepper, it made me reminisce about my time in central Texas,\u201d Chipman responded. \u201cBut now to your question, with respect to the AR-15, I support a ban as has been presented in a Senate bill, and supported by the president.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe AR-15 is a gun I was issued on ATF\u2019s SWAT team,\u201d Chipman added. \u201cAnd it\u2019s a particularly lethal weapon, and regulating it as other particularly lethal weapons, I have advocated for.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cAs ATF director, if I\u2019m confirmed, I would simply enforce the laws on the books, and right now there is no such ban on those guns.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cSo, you want to ban the most popular rifle in America,\u201d Cruz fired back.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"11.163568773234\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">WATCH: Sen. As <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/biden-gun-control-atf-david-chipman-assault-weapons-nra\"><span>Fox News<\/span><\/a><span> reported, Dudley Brown, the President of the National Association for Gun Rights, slammed Chipman\u2019s nomination, saying \u201cChipman has embraced every hair-brained gun control scheme proposed, so of course Biden and Harris chose him \u2014 he\u2019ll fit right in with their corrupt administration.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>As president, Joe Biden has indeed been an advocate for a return of the so called \u201cassault weapon\u201d ban. During a press conference in early April, Biden <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/fact-checking-bidens-latest-gun-control-press-conference\">said<\/a>, \u201cI know this has been a hobby horse of mine for a long time. Got it done once. We should also ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines in this country.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cFor that 10 years we had it done, the number of mass shootings actually went down,\u201d Biden claimed. In reality, this is false, with the average number of mass shootings per year before and during the \u201cAssault Weapons Ban\u201d remaining <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tcf.org\/content\/commentary\/the-assault-weapons-ban-did-it-curtail-mass-shootings\/?session=1\"><span>unchanged<\/span><\/a><span> at 1.5 events per year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Biden has made similarly false or misleading statements in the past. In late April, Biden <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/5-false-or-misleading-claims-that-biden-made-during-his-speech-to-congress\"><span>claimed<\/span><\/a><span>, \u201c<\/span><span>In the \u201990s we passed universal background checks, a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines that hold 100 rounds that can be fired off in seconds. We beat the N.R.A. Mass shootings and gun violence declined, check out the report, over 10 years. \u2026 We need a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines. And don\u2019t tell me it can\u2019t be done.
