We\u2019re thankful that they showed great concern.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">After the meeting at the White House, Floyd\u2019s brother, Philonise, called on Congress to pass laws, saying, \u201cIf you can make federal laws to protect the bird which is the bald eagle, then you can make federal laws to protect people of color.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cWe all said enough is enough. We need to be able to set standards and procedures in place,\u201d Philonise Floyd said at a press conference. \u201cWe need to be working together to make sure that people do not live in fear in America anymore. This is the land of the free, people fight to get here. Give them that opportunity to want to come here, not stay in places where they\u2019re having trouble.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2021\/05\/25\/statement-by-president-joe-biden-on-the-first-anniversary-of-george-floyds-murder\/\">statement<\/a>, Biden said that Floyd\u2019s \u201cmurder launched a summer of protest we hadn\u2019t seen since the Civil Rights era in the \u201860s \u2013 protests that peacefully unified people of every race and generation to collectively say enough of the senseless killings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">He added that the guilty verdict in the George Floyd case \u201cwas another important step forward toward justice,\u201d but stated that \u201cour progress can\u2019t stop there.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Biden\u2019s statement also referenced the legislation in Congress, saying, \u201cThe negotiations on the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act in Congress are ongoing. I have strongly supported the legislation that passed the House, and I appreciate the good-faith efforts from Democrats and Republicans to pass a meaningful bill out of the Senate. It\u2019s my hope they will get a bill to my desk quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Vice President Kamala Harris also released a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2021\/05\/25\/statement-by-vice-president-kamala-harris-on-meeting-with-the-family-of-george-floyd\/\">statement<\/a>, saying that the video recording of the encounter between George Floyd and former Minneapolis Police officer Derek Chauvin \u201crevealed to the country what Black Americans have known to be true for generations.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">On April 20, a jury <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/breaking-jury-finds-derek-chauvin-guilty\"><span class=\"s1\">found<\/span><\/a> Chauvin guilty of second-degree murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter in relation to the death of Floyd.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">As The Daily Wire <a href=\"http:\/\/On%20April%2020,%20a%20jury%20found%20Chauvin%20guilty%20of%20second-degree%20murder,%20third-degree%20murder,%20and%20second-degree%20manslaughter%20in%20relation%20to%20the%20death%20of%20Floyd.\"><span class=\"s1\">reported<\/span><\/a>, on May 25, 2020, Chauvin and three other officers arrested and detained Floyd after he allegedly gave counterfeit money at a convenience store. Following a struggle to get Floyd into the back of a police cruiser, viral video shows that&nbsp;Chauvin knelt on Floyd\u2019s neck and back for nearly nine minutes to detain Floyd while awaiting paramedics.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In her statement, Harris said that the guilty verdict in the case \u201cprovided some measure of justice. But one verdict does not address the persistent issue of police misconduct and use of excessive force.\u201d She also called on Congress to \u201cmove swiftly and act with a sense of urgency.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">During his address to a joint session of Congress last month, Biden had pushed Congress to pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act by the one-year anniversary of Floyd\u2019s death. Congressional sources, however, \u201ctold Politico that the White House does not expect that the police reform bill will pass anytime soon and that they are waiting on a bipartisan \u2018compromise\u2019 agreement,\u201d per <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/biden-to-host-george-floyds-family-at-white-house-on-anniversary-of-his-death\"><span class=\"s1\">The Daily Wire<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Last summer, Senator Tim Scott (R-SC) led a police reform bill that was ultimately blocked by Democrats.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">As The Daily Wire <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/democrats-block-republican-police-reform-bill-kill-hope-of-passing-legislation-amid-protests\"><span class=\"s1\">reported<\/span><\/a> at the time, it \u201cfailed before its text ever made it to the floor. Democrats were able to marshal their caucus to defeat a vote designed to bring the issue to the floor for debate and killed the bill 55-45. A total of 60 votes would have been necessary to move the bill forward.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The Daily Wire reported:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"12\">\n<p class=\"p1\"><i>Democrats fought the Republican bill, led by Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC), which they said did not go far enough in addressing critical issues at the crux of police reform. The bill did not ban the use of chokeholds outright, preferring instead to warn departments to craft their own policies against the practice or risk losing federal funds. The bill also shied away from outlawing so-called \u201cno-knock\u201d warrants, preferring instead to establish a national database to track those warrants\u2019 use and abuse.<\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>In late April, Detroit\u2019s Police Chief, James Craig, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/watch-this-will-decimate-policing-as-we-know-it-detroit-police-chief-tears-into-george-floyd-justice-in-policing-act\">ripped into<\/a> the <a href=\"https:\/\/judiciary.house.gov\/issues\/issue\/?IssueID=14924\">George Floyd&nbsp;Justice in&nbsp;Policing Act<\/a> and its intent to eliminate&nbsp;qualified immunity&nbsp;for law enforcement, snapping, \u201cThis will decimate policing as we know it.
