Rand Paul (R-KY) about hormone treatments for young children.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cDr. Levine, you have supported both allowing minors to be given hormone blockers to prevent them from going through puberty, as well as surgical destruction of a minor\u2019s genitalia,\u201d Sen. Paul pressed, citing a study noting that \u201c80 to 95 percent of pre-pubertal children with gender dysphoria will experience resolution by late adolescence if not exposed to medical intervention and social affirmation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cTransgender medicine is a very complex and nuanced field with robust research and standards of care that have been developed,\u201d said Levine. When Sen. Paul asked his question a second time, Levine provided a nearly identical response.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Even though \u201ctransgender medicine\u201d is now embraced by the nation\u2019s top public health officials, many adolescents and older adults who were once subjected to hormone treatments and surgeries are speaking out against the practice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Here are five people who regret going through transgender therapy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Grace Lidinsky-Smith<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>Grace Lidinsky-Smith \u2014 who underwent a female-to-male transition in 2017 \u2014 runs a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hormonehangover.substack.com\/people\/5629717-hormone-hangover\"><span>Substack<\/span><\/a><span> called \u201cHormone Hangover\u201d detailing her experiences.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hormonehangover.substack.com\/p\/top-surgery-regret-part-1\"><span>essay<\/span><\/a><span> explaining her transition, Lidinsky-Smith wrote that she has \u201cmade a lot of mistakes in my life,\u201d but \u201cnone have impacted me so indelibly\u201d as her decision to undergo surgery to remove her breasts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cAs I write this, the mastectomy scars are twinging on my chest. 4 years later, I\u2019ve grown older, wiser, and way more cautious. But the scars remain,\u201d she wrote. \u201cWhen I realized that being a trans man wasn\u2019t what I wanted anymore, I fell into despair. My body was permanently changed. The surgery was the hardest thing to deal with. The scars hurt. I missed the feeling of having an intact, unscarred body. I was convinced my life had been ruined.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Despite expecting \u201ca transformative and spiritual experience\u201d from her surgery, she was instead left with \u201cpsychological fallout,\u201d \u201closs,\u201d and \u201cgrief.\u201d She also felt \u201cbetrayed, disoriented, and confused.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In another <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hormonehangover.substack.com\/p\/top-surgery-regret-part-2-healing\"><span>essay<\/span><\/a><span>, Lidinsky-Smith writes that she at first attempted \u201ctrying to honor myself for what I was trying to do with transition.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIt\u2019s hard to imagine life as a woman without breasts, especially after you had them removed to try to live as a man,\u201d she explained. \u201cI\u2019ve struggled with feeling like I\u2019m scarred, mutilated, and deformed. It really sucks. But you can heal from them to a large extent, and learn to live with them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Carey Callahan<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>Carey Callahan \u2014 from whom Lidinsky-Smith derived inspiration for her blog \u2014 likewise attempted a female-to-male transition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>As a feature story from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/magazine\/archive\/2018\/07\/when-a-child-says-shes-trans\/561749\/\"><span>The Atlantic<\/span><\/a><span> explains, Callahan de-transitioned following a four-year period of identifying as transgender and a nine-month regiment of male hormones. During her work at a San Francisco transgender clinic in 2014 and 2015, Callahan realized that people who had transitioned \u201cwere cutting themselves, starving themselves, never leaving their apartments.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThat made me doubt the narrative that if you make it all the way to medical transition, then it\u2019s probably going to work out well for you,\u201d she recounted.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@mariacatt42\/the-game-plan-for-when-transition-hasnt-worked-out-29bf52bc7908\"><span>essay<\/span><\/a><span> about her experiences designed to help other de-transitioning individuals, Callahan compared her experience to a \u201cbad trip.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cYes, I am appropriating drug culture and stealing it for detransition mental health,\u201d she wrote. \u201cHave faith. You will get out of this bad trip. Not immediately \u2014 just like with hallucinogens there\u2019s some time between when you want off the ride and when the ride lets you off. You\u2019ll have to be patient. I think it took two years after detransitioning before I began to have windows of feeling like myself again.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>For those two years, Callahan devoted herself to \u201cfeeling big, hard feelings, but behaving in a strategic and outcome-oriented manner.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Keira Bell<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>Keira Bell \u2014 a 23-year-old woman from the United Kingdom \u2014 was subjected to transgender hormone treatment and surgery when she was a teenager.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Bell had a difficult childhood; after her parents <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.persuasion.community\/p\/keira-bell-my-story\"><span>divorced<\/span><\/a><span> when she was five years old, her mother descended into alcoholism and mental illness. By the time she was 14, Bell was \u201cseverely depressed and had given up.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI stopped going to school; I stopped going outside,\u201d she wrote. \u201cI just stayed in my room, avoiding my mother, playing video games, getting lost in my favorite music, and surfing the internet.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>After experiencing attraction to females, she grew to believe that \u201cit would be best if I stopped becoming a woman.\u201d Psychologists within Britain\u2019s National Health Service diagnosed her with gender dysphoria; she began taking puberty blockers and hormone shots \u201cafter a series of superficial conversations with social workers.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Five years later, she began de-transitioning: \u201cAs I matured, I recognized that gender dysphoria was a symptom of my overall misery, not its cause.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>James Shupe<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>James Shupe \u2014 the first American to obtain nonbinary status under law \u2014 recently resumed living as a biological male.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In 2015, Shupe began working as a transgender activist; he once claimed to The New York Times that he lived \u201cin a world where radical, conservative politicians and religious groups routinely attack my very existence with legislation to deny me basic human rights such as a bathroom that matches my gender-identity.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In 2019, however, a Portland judge granted his petition to legally restore his sex to male \u2014 a development that he attributed to \u201cGod\u2019s grace.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cNew to identifying as a woman at that stage of my life, but indoctrinated by the peddlers of transgender ideology to believe I was one, I incorrectly believed that gaining access to female bathrooms was a human rights issue for me,\u201d he <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailysignal.com\/2020\/02\/10\/my-new-life-after-transgender-despair\/\"><span>wrote<\/span><\/a><span> for The Daily Signal. \u201cAlthough my landmark court case was built on lies, deceit, and pseudoscience, I didn\u2019t care. It didn\u2019t matter to me that the sex change petition fictitiously claimed my sex was non-binary and got two doctors to say so.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWhen I was finished, sex was no longer grounded to science by things like chromosomes and genitals observed at birth. It was determined by personal feelings rooted in what I would later come to realize were sex stereotypes,\u201d he continued. \u201cIn my mind, by winning the case, I was sticking it to those radical feminists who had refused to accept me as one of them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Walt Heyer&nbsp;<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>Walt Heyer \u2014 another adult who resumed living according to his biological sex \u2014 now works as an activist to help other de-transitioned people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Heyer \u2014 who runs the website <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sexchangeregret.com\"><span>Sex Change Regret<\/span><\/a><span> \u2014 went through male-to-female gender reassignment surgery in 1983: \u201cAt first I was giddy for the fresh start. But hormones and sex change genital surgery couldn\u2019t solve the underlying issues driving my gender dysphoria.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>While de-transitioning 25 years ago, Heyer learned that \u201chormones and surgery may alter appearances, but nothing changes the immutable fact of your sex.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Heyer has written several books about his experience.
