Its agents deserve a director who will inspire confidence from the people they serve,\u201d the letter stated.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>The attorneys general are concerned ATF nominee David Chipman would divert the bureau\u2019s resources from cracking down on violent criminals to attacking Americans\u2019 Second Amendment rights, they wrote in the letter obtained by the Daily Caller News Foundation.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A coalition of 20 states sent a letter to Senate leaders Tuesday, urging them to reject President Joe Biden\u2019s nominee to lead the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/04\/07\/david-chipman-atf-biden-waco-branch-davidians\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">David Chipman\u2019s<\/a> past anti-gun activism makes him unfit to lead the Justice Department\u2019s Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), according to the letter signed by 20 Republican state attorneys general and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scribd.com\/document\/509309667\/State-Attorneys-General-Letter-to-Senate-Leaders\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">obtained<\/a> by the Daily Caller News Foundation. Confirming <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/04\/09\/david-chipman-atf-tucker-carlson-conspiracy-nut-waco\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chipman<\/a> would be an attack on the Second Amendment and on the millions of law-abiding gun owners in the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe ATF has an important role to play in upholding the public safety of communities around the country. Its agents deserve a director who will inspire confidence from the people they serve,\u201d the letter stated. \u201cGiven Mr. Chipman\u2019s history of anti-gun lobbying and political activism, Americans cannot be reasonably expected to believe he will be an unbiased enforcer of current laws.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The attorneys general are concerned Chipman would divert the bureau\u2019s resources from cracking down on violent criminals to attacking Americans\u2019 Second Amendment rights, they wrote in the letter. (Chip Somodevilla\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Chipman was an ATF special agent for 25 years <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/04\/07\/biden-nominate-gun-control-activist-david-chipman-atf-director\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">before joining<\/a> the prominent gun control group Giffords as a senior policy advisor.<\/p>\n<p>President Joe Biden <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/04\/07\/biden-nominate-gun-control-activist-david-chipman-atf-director\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">nominated<\/a> Chipman to be director of the ATF in April. The president said Chipman is the \u201cright person\u201d to lead the ATF during <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/speeches-remarks\/2021\/04\/08\/remarks-by-president-biden-on-gun-violence-prevention\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">remarks<\/a> on April 8 during which he laid out a series of executive actions related to gun control.<\/p>\n<p>The attorneys general accused Chipman of being out of touch with Americans in their Tuesday letter. They referenced Chipman\u2019s position favoring more regulations on AR-15 rifles, which they said are used in fewer murders than sharp objects.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs state Attorneys General, we took an oath to uphold the Constitution of the United States and protect the rights and freedoms of our constituents,\u201d the letter said. \u201cThese responsibilities force us to stand in opposition to Mr. Chipman\u2019s nomination and in support of our constituents\u2019 rights.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The letter of opposition was addressed to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, Judiciary Committee Chairman Dick Durbin and Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Chuck Grassley. The effort was led by Republican Montana Attorney General Austin Knudsen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Georgia, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, Utah and West Virginia joined Montana.<\/p>\n<p>The attorneys general concluded by demanding that Biden nominate someone \u201cwho is not hostile to our rights and way of life\u201d to lead the ATF.<\/p>\n<p>A coalition of 17 Democratic attorneys general, meanwhile, penned a letter to Schumer, McConnell, Durbin and Grassley in support of Chipman last week, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/senate\/554401-democratic-ags-write-to-senate-backing-biden-atf-nominee\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Hill<\/a>.
