{"id":539825,"date":"2021-05-25T12:51:37","date_gmt":"2021-05-25T16:51:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/?p=539825"},"modified":"2021-05-25T12:51:41","modified_gmt":"2021-05-25T16:51:41","slug":"rutgers-law-drops-policy-requiring-student-groups-to-promote-critical-race-theory","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/rutgers-law-drops-policy-requiring-student-groups-to-promote-critical-race-theory\/","title":{"rendered":"Rutgers Law Drops Policy Requiring Student Groups To Promote Critical Race Theory"},"content":{"rendered":"<aside class=\"mashsb-container mashsb-main mashsb-stretched\"><div class=\"mashsb-box\"><div class=\"mashsb-count mash-medium\" style=\"&quot;\"><div class=\"counts mashsbcount\">24<\/div><span class=\"mashsb-sharetext\">SHARES<\/span><\/div><div class=\"mashsb-buttons\"><a class=\"mashicon-facebook mash-medium mash-nomargin mashsb-noshadow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/sharer.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.conservativenewsdaily.net%2Fbreaking-news%2Frutgers-law-drops-policy-requiring-student-groups-to-promote-critical-race-theory%2F\" target=\"_top\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span class=\"icon\"><\/span><span class=\"text\">Facebook<\/span><\/a><a class=\"mashicon-twitter mash-medium mash-nomargin mashsb-noshadow\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/intent\/tweet?text=&amp;url=https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/?p=539825&amp;via=ConservNewsDly\" target=\"_top\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span class=\"icon\"><\/span><span class=\"text\">Twitter<\/span><\/a><a class=\"mashicon-subscribe mash-medium mash-nomargin mashsb-noshadow\" href=\"#\" target=\"_top\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span class=\"icon\"><\/span><span class=\"text\">Subscribe<\/span><\/a><div class=\"onoffswitch2 mash-medium mashsb-noshadow\" style=\"display:none\"><\/div><\/div>\n            <\/div>\n                <div style=\"clear:both\"><\/div><\/aside>\n            <!-- Share buttons by mashshare.net - Version: 4.0.47--><div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/GettyImages-1287306841-1200x800-1.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\" \/><\/div>\n<p>Six months ago, Rutgers Law School-Camden\u2019s Student Bar Association (SBA) passed an amendment that forced student groups to promote critical race theory if they wanted to receive student government funding.<\/p>\n<p>The Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE) sent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefire.org\/fire-letter-to-rutgers-university-may-17-2021\/\">a letter<\/a> to Rutgers University, asking them to rescind the requirement, informing the university that such a requirement violated students\u2019 First Amendment rights.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRutgers may not condition student organizations\u2019 funding on their willingness to host events that address or promote a specific ideology, as the First Amendment requires that public universities distribute student activity fee funds in a viewpoint-neutral manner,\u201d FIRE wrote.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, FIRE program officer Zach Greenberg condemned the law school\u2019s actions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Rutgers student government is holding student group funding hostage until students commit to a particular ideology,\u201d Greenberg said. \u201cStudents shouldn\u2019t be forced to choose between their club\u2019s funding and their own convictions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The requirement was adopted on November 20, 2020, which added a section to the Rutgers\u2019 Camden campus\u2019 constitution entitled \u201cStudent Organizations Fosters Diversity and Inclusion.\u201d The section mandated that any student group seeking more than $250 in university funding must \u201cplan at least one (1) event that addresses their chosen topics through the lens of Critical Race Theory, diversity and inclusion, or cultural competency.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As FIRE noted, 19 out of 22 students groups last fall requested more than $250.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis puts student clubs in a bind: Should they request the funding they need, even though it would require planning an event \u2014 such as hosting a speaker, outing, or mixer \u2014 that may be at odds with or unrelated to the group\u2019s own views?\u201d FIRE asked.<\/p>\n<p>Following FIRE\u2019s letter and public pressure, Rutgers-Camden\u2019s Student Bar Association met with university administration officials. Following that meeting, the SBA sent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefire.org\/email-from-rutgers-university-camden-student-bar-association-may-23-2021\/\">an email<\/a> to the Rutgers Law community announcing they had rescinded the requirement.<\/p>\n<p>The email, however, struck a tone making it clear that the SBA didn\u2019t want to rescind the order, nor did it seem to have any concerns over the requirement\u2019s unconstitutional demands. The email from the SBA said they \u201cregret to inform\u201d the community that they had to rescind the requirement, due to the \u201cstrict deadline\u201d FIRE imposed when requesting a response to its letter, and also due to \u201cthe constitutional issues presented.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe hate the idea of backing down, just because the \u2018other guys\u2019 say so, and we hate that we have to factor in those that oppose measures to foster diversity and inclusion, we do,\u201d the letter said, ignoring the real concerns over critical race theory by claiming this is about some student groups not wanting to include minority students. \u201cWe think \u2013 and we hope, [sic] we can still create change, still fight for what is right, and pass this amendment, or something similar again. But right now, we know that if we dig our heels in now [sic], this way, we run the risk of never being able to accomplish what we set out to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>FIRE responded to the SBA\u2019s claims in its email:<\/p>\n<p><em>As a public university, Rutgers is bound by the First Amendment, which prohibits discrimination based on viewpoint. The SBA\u2019s amendment was blatantly unconstitutional because it made funding conditional upon the promotion of an ideology and would discriminate against any student group that objects to the \u201clens\u201d of critical race theory or wishes to remain neutral.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The Daily Wire is one of America\u2019s fastest-growing conservative media companies and counter-cultural outlets for news, opinion, and entertainment.
