Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) claimed during a recent interview that she was \u201cdoing therapy\u201d because of the January 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol, adding that former President Donald Trump had her in a \u201cvery reactive mode.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ocasio-Cortez made the remarks during an interview late last week with Latino USA, saying that the events of January 6 were \u201cextraordinarily traumatizing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Business Insider <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/wN4M8#selection-2865.0-2865.161\">highlighted<\/a> one specific claim that AOC made:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"7\">\n<p><em>\u2026Ocasio-Cortez said that the insurrection was deeply traumatizing for many members of Congress, who effectively \u201cserved in war.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThe cycle has just been moved on, but it has deeply, deeply affected lawmaking, policymaking, it has impacted the actual legislative process, the aftermath of it, and it\u2019s very quiet, it\u2019s not spoken about,\u201d AOC said. \u201cI think after the 6th, I took some time and it was really Ayanna Presley, when I explained to her what had happened to me like the day of, because I ran to her office. And she was like, you need to recognize trauma and that this is something that you went through, but we\u2019re all going through.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When asked by the host of the show if she was \u201cdoing therapy,\u201d AOC responded: \u201cYeah. Oh, yeah, I am doing therapy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut also, I\u2019ve just slowed down,\u201d she continued. \u201cI think the Trump administration had a lot of us, especially Latino communities, in a very reactive mode. And so I\u2019ve been putting myself in more proactive space.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>AOC claimed that it was \u201can all-out attempted coup\u201d and that the U.S. was potentially only 60 seconds away from having \u201ca martial state.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>AOC responded to criticisms of her claims of what happened that day by claiming that those who were criticizing her were doing so out of \u201cwhite supremacy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u201dI think the attacks on the right are about, there are certain mythologies that are really important to this idea of American exceptionalism,\u201d she claimed. \u201cBut there\u2019s also certain mythologies that are very important to maintaining white supremacy, white supremacy in and of itself is a mythology. And you have to protect it in order to protect that political power, which has now become a very important base in the Republican Party. And that\u2019s why that response was so vociferous, to make it seem that it wasn\u2019t as bad as it was, and it was bad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ocasio-Cortez has opened up in the past about her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/ocasio-cortez-reveals-shes-cutting-back-social-ryan-saavedra\">stress<\/a>, saying that she had to significantly cut back on social media because \u201cit has effects on everybody,\u201d including \u201cincreased isolation, depression, anxiety, addiction, escapism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI actually think that social media poses a public health risk to everybody,\u201d Ocasio-Cortez said. \u201cThere are amplified impacts for young people, particularly children under the age of 3 with screen time. But I think it has a lot of effects on older people. I think it has effects on everybody. Increased isolation, depression, anxiety, addiction, escapism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI personally gave up Facebook, which was kind of a big deal because I started my campaign on Facebook,\u201d Ocasio-Cortez continued. \u201cAnd Facebook was my primary digital organizing tool for a very long time. I gave up on it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLike every once in a while, you\u2019ll see me hop on Twitter on the weekends, but for the most part, I take consumption of content, when it comes to consumption and reading, I take the weekends off,\u201d Ocasio-Cortez added. \u201cAnd so I\u2019m not, like, scrolling through trying to read everything online that journalists are writing on weekends.
