Census announcements from China also showed slowest birth rates in decades, the Times reported, noting that \u201cthe era of high fertility is ending.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"css-1fanzo5 StoryBodyCompanionColumn\" readability=\"39.77165883143\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\" readability=\"35.352585627938\">\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">More parents are delaying getting pregnant and fewer babies are being born, in part due to gains in contraception and education for women, the Times reported. Economic anxieties have also contributed to lowering birth rates, experts have said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not just COVID,\u201d University of New Hampshire senior demographer Kenneth Johnson <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/births-in-u-s-drop-to-levels-not-seen-since-1979-11620187260\">previously told the Wall Street Journal<\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s the fact that the <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.fo\/o\/dZnmn\/https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/u-s-birthrates-fall-to-record-low-11589947260?mod=article_inline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">birthrates never recovered<\/a> from the Great Recession.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been waiting for years to see a big jump in fertility to women in their 30s and it hasn\u2019t happened,\u201d Johnson said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">The Times reported that though the change in birth rates may take decades, the decline will spiral exponentially once it starts.<\/p>\n<p>Asian demographer Stuart Gietal Basten described the process to the Times as a \u201ccyclical mechanism,\u201d adding, \u201cIt\u2019s demographic momentum.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" readability=\"11.6\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">\u201cMaternity wards are already shutting down in Italy. The country\u2019s fertility rate has continued to drop for the past 59 months, the publication reported.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">This declining birth rate has created a two-tiered society in which major cities continue to grow but regional towns waste away without children.<\/p>\n<p>In the Italian town of Capracotta, the population has \u201cdramatically aged and contracted\u201d from 5,000 people to 800, according to the Times. One former school has been converted to a nursing home.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"css-1fanzo5 StoryBodyCompanionColumn\" readability=\"32.5\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\" readability=\"10\">\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">\u201cThere were so many families, so many children,\u201d said 93-year-old former student and teacher Concetta D\u2019Andrea. \u201cNow there is no one.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"css-1fanzo5 StoryBodyCompanionColumn\" readability=\"38\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\" readability=\"21\">\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">In Agnone, about a half an hour away from Capracotta, the town\u2019s maternity ward was forced to close due to fewer than 500 births a year, according to the Times.
