His crime? He said he wanted out of the marriage.<\/p>\n<p>That night, he told Axiak that he was unhappy and wanted a separation, NCA Newswire <a href=\"https:\/\/www.news.com.au\/national\/victoria\/courts-law\/maria-axiak-spared-jail-for-boiling-water-attack-on-husband\/news-story\/bf2b6b365c6b71737f59f3aecc848fed\">reported<\/a>. He said he would sleep in the guest bedroom so that she could sleep in the master bedroom, and after he fell asleep, Axiak smoked a cigarette before disconnecting the landline so that he could not call for help. She then boiled a pot of water and poured it over him as he slept.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe then drove out of the house, taking the (victim\u2019s) mobile phone and car keys with her,\u201d a police summary of the case said.<\/p>\n<p>Her husband had to seek help at a neighbor\u2019s house. He had to be put into an induced coma at the hospital and receive skin grafts, as the burns from Axiak\u2019s attack covered 12% of his body.<\/p>\n<p>After leaving the house, Axiak drove to her daughter\u2019s home and told her \u201che deserves it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOut of 20 years of misery, I want him to look in the mirror every day \u2026\u201d she reportedly said. \u201cI took his keys and phone and I don\u2019t give a f***.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She later sent her daughter a \u201cthumbs up\u201d and \u201cclapping hands\u201d emojis to show excitement. She also wrote, \u201cI hope they keep him there (in hospital) for at least a month.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Axiak told police she did it because she was tired of her husband\u2019s drinking and claimed he kept \u201cspoiling her weekends.\u201d She later claimed to the court that she \u201cfelt abused and controlled\u201d by her husband.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen he looks in the mirror he can see I\u2019ve been hurt too,\u201d she told police, adding she hoped he had blisters on his skin.<\/p>\n<p>Newswire reported that Judge Claire Quin said Axiak told the court her parents were both alcoholics and that her mother was abusive. The outlet noted that Axiak \u201cmoved from Malta to Australia at age 18 with her first husband, with the \u2018unhappy\u2019 marriage ending after 10 years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The court was also told, according to Newswire, that Axiak \u201chas major depression, bipolar, and PTSD, having undergone treatments including electroconvulsive therapy and had multiple voluntary and involuntary hospital admissions for mental health, the court heard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For this, Axiak was spared jail time for her attack, which left her husband with a perforated eardrum and burns to his head, right arm, shoulder, and torso.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am satisfied on the balance of probabilities that your impaired mental functioning from PTSD is causally linked to the commission of the offence and that it substantially and materially reduces your culpability,\u201d Judge Quin reportedly said.<\/p>\n<p>Axiak did spend 37 days in prison prior to sentencing.
