The parents\u2019 group, called the Coalition for TJ, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/parent-coalition-alleges-elite-virginia-high-schools-admissions-process-discriminates-against-asian-american-students\">alleged<\/a> that the high school\u2019s new admissions policy disadvantages Asian American students against other applicants.<\/p>\n<p>The Fairfax County School Board overhauled admissions procedures at TJ last year following its commitment to \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fcps.edu\/equity\/anti-racism-anti-bias-education-policy\">anti-racism<\/a>\u201d in the wake of the numerous protests and riots over the death of George Floyd. As the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/national\/suit-alleging-admissions-discrimination-moves-forward-in-va\/2021\/05\/21\/d690c9ee-ba5b-11eb-bc4a-62849cf6cca9_story.html\">Associated Press<\/a> reports:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"13\">\n<p><em>The new system now allocates slots at the highly competitive school in a system that distributes the vast majority of slots to the top 1.5 percent of students at each of the county\u2019s middle schools.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>School board members have said that increasing geographic diversity at the school should improve racial diversity. Other items that were seen as a barrier to Black and Hispanic families, including an application fee, have been eliminated.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Attorney Stuart Raphael, who is representing the Fairfax County School Board in the suit, moved Friday to have the lawsuit dismissed. Raphael argued that the school\u2019s new admissions process is explicitly race-neutral and that admissions personnel do not know the races of applicants.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. District Judge Claude Hilton ruled against Raphael. \u201cEverybody knows the policy is not race neutral, and that it\u2019s designed to affect the racial composition of the school,\u201d Hilton said, according to the AP. \u201cYou can say all sorts of beautiful things while you\u2019re doing others.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a blow to the Coalition for TJ, Hilton declined to place an injunction against the school to stop admissions for the 2021-22 school year, which is moving forward under the new system. Hilton said that the admissions process for the year is almost done and an injunction would be too disruptive.<\/p>\n<p>The Pacific Legal Foundation, which is representing the Coalition for TJ in the lawsuit, <a href=\"https:\/\/pacificlegal.org\/case\/coalition_for_tj\/\">argues<\/a> that Asian American middle schoolers who attend one of three middle schools that traditionally send the most students to TJ will be disadvantaged.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[T]he&nbsp;new admissions policy also caps the number of students allowed from each&nbsp;of the district\u2019s 23 middle schools.&nbsp;The three&nbsp;middle schools that typically account for&nbsp;most of&nbsp;TJ\u2019s&nbsp;admissions have higher numbers of&nbsp;Asian-American&nbsp;students than most other middle schools,\u201d PLF states. \u201cAs a result, TJ\u2019s Class of 2025 is projected to have 42&nbsp;percent fewer Asian-American students, while no other racial group will lose seats.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a statement given after the lawsuit was filed in March, a spokeswoman for the school board called TJ\u2019s previous admissions exam one of the \u201chistorical barriers\u201d blocking students \u201cfrom culturally and ethnically diverse socioeconomic backgrounds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/parent-coalition-alleges-elite-virginia-high-schools-admissions-process-discriminates-against-asian-american-students\">Parent Coalition Alleges Elite Virginia High School\u2019s Admissions Process Discriminates Against Asian-American Students<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>The Daily Wire is one of America\u2019s fastest-growing conservative media companies and counter-cultural outlets for news, opinion, and entertainment.
