The president added that standing against hatred and racism, which he called \u201cthe ugly poison that has long haunted and plagued our nation,\u201d is what brings the nation together.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy message to all of those who are hurting is: We see you and the Congress has said, we see you. It also includes a bipartisan provision that offers federal grants to state and local law enforcement to improve hate crime reporting.<\/p>\n<p>The legislation was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/117th-congress\/senate-bill\/937\/cosponsors?searchResultViewType=expanded\">introduced<\/a> in late March by Democratic New York Rep. Grace Meng and Democratic Hawaii Sen. Mazie Hirono. It was <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/04\/14\/senate-advances-asian-american-hate-crimes-bill-gop-filibuster\/\">passed in the Senate<\/a> in April by a 94-1 vote and was later <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/05\/18\/house-passes-covid-19-hate-crimes-act-grace-meng-mazie-hirono\/\">passed in the House<\/a> on Tuesday by a 364-62 vote.<\/p>\n<p>The legislation originally lacked widespread Republican support but was ultimately endorsed by several notable Republicans, including Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell. He and Maine Sen. Susan Collins were among the Republicans reported in attendance at Thursday\u2019s signing ceremony, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2021\/05\/20\/998599775\/biden-to-sign-the-covid-19-hate-crimes-bill-as-anti-asian-american-attacks-rise\">according<\/a> to NPR.<\/p>\n<p>The new law is a response to the <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/02\/12\/hate-crimes-against-asian-americans-increase-pandemic\/\">reported increase in<\/a> violence and hate crimes against Asian Americans during the pandemic. <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/03\/30\/asian-american-violence-racism-cefaan-kim-new-york-43rd-street\/\">Multiple<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/05\/04\/asian-woman-brutally-attacked-hammer-new-york-city\/\">violent<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/04\/05\/philadelphia-video-man-hitting-asian-woman-attack-race\/\">attacks<\/a> have been reported in a number of cities over the past several months.
