U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) defines \u2018non-essential\u2019 travel as travel for \u2018tourism purposes (e.g., sightseeing, recreation, gambling, or attending cultural events),\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.natlawreview.com\/article\/biden-administration-extends-us-mexico-and-us-canada-covid-19-border-restrictions\">according to National Law Review<\/a>. \u201c\u2019Essential\u2019 travel includes, among other categories, U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents returning to the United States, individuals traveling for medical purposes, and individuals traveling to work in the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Trump administration used Title 42, the Free Beacon noted, to turn away any migrant who post \u201ca serious danger of introduction of [a communicable] disease,\u201d allowing immigration officials to deny entry to an increasing number of single male asylum seekers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA May memo,\u201d the outlet noted, \u201chighlighted a potential workaround of the safety measures. The memo, authored by senior staff at CBP, emphasizes the ability of \u2018customs officers [to] determine [who] should be allowed into the United States,&#8217;\u201d effectively taking a more nuanced approach to expelling immigrants over COVID-19 concerns.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCustoms and Border Protection officials say the Biden administration is looking to liberally interpret that provision, which was initially meant for migrants with extenuating circumstances related to humanitarian concerns or political repression. Broadening the humanitarian exemption would constitute a de facto reversal of the Trump administration\u2019s guidance on limiting migration into the country,\u201d the Free Beacon reported.<\/p>\n<p>The move may come in response to reports that Vice President Kamala Harris, who was placed in charge of handling the border crisis more than 50 days ago, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/kamala-harris-blasted-trump-admin-for-using-covid-19-as-excuse-to-close-the-border-now-the-biden-administration-is-doing-the-same-thing\">was facing criticism from progressive and pro-immigration<\/a> groups over the Biden administration\u2019s decision to leave Title 42 intact.<\/p>\n<p>Harris signed a letter during President Donald Trump\u2019s tenure, calling the Title 42 policy a \u201c\u2019startling expansion of executive powers\u2019 designed to limit those seeking \u2018humanitarian protection\u2019 from seeking asylum, and suggesting that the Trump administration was causing a public health crisis by arbitrarily enforcing its interpretation of an outdated statute,\u201d according to an earlier report from The Daily Wire.<\/p>\n<p>She faced a call, even, from her own former colleagues, questioning why she had so suddenly decided to reverse course on the issue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMore than 60 House Democrats are urging President Joe Biden to end the policy, saying it has no legal basis. Dozens of public health experts say it has \u2018no scientific basis as a public health measure.,\u201d The Daily Wire noted in early May. \u201cImmigration advocates have filed legal challenges as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Biden administration is still struggling to address the ongoing immigration crisis. Although many of the unaccompanied minors who once flooded border detention facilities have since been moved to Heath and Human Services-run shelters, the number of individuals seeking to cross the United States\u2019 southern border has not decreased.
