Wade\u201d faced a crush of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/secret-roe-v-wade-film-now-shooting-new-orleans-1124557\/\">challenges<\/a> in the run-up to its April release date, from crew members quitting mid-production to secured locations suddenly preventing the crew from working on their property.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">That\u2019s only part of the story, according to two figures behind a film that takes a pro-life perspective on the infamous 1973 Supreme Court abortion decision. They allege the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) attempted to crush the film before it could reach the public, a charge the union vigorously denies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Nick Loeb, who stars in \u201cRoe v. Wade\u201d as well as co-writing and co-directing the feature, says he initially kept quiet about the matter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cWe were so scared to talk about it \u2026 you know how powerful SAG is,\u201d Loeb says. So why open up about the matter now?<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cWe\u2019ve got nothing to lose,\u201d says Loeb, whose film has been available on major streaming platforms like iTunes and Amazon for the last few weeks. \u201cThe story needs to be told.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Loeb says SAG assigned a representative to work with \u201cRoe v. Wade,\u201d a standard practice in the industry. Though he didn\u2019t know the background of the SAG person assigned to his film initially, he later learned she was Pearl Brady, who doubles as a volunteer clinic escort for Planned Parenthood.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Brady\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/pearl-brady-she-her-6a3b571b7\/\"><span class=\"s1\">LinkedIn page<\/span><\/a> confirms her ties to both SAG and Planned Parenthood. SAG did not return a request for comment on why Brady was assigned to rep \u201cRoe v. Wade\u201d given her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/witness-the-trauma-of-abortion-clinic-harassment-in-virtual-reality_n_59258870e4b0650cc020a068\">personal history<\/a> and the film\u2019s subject matter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Loeb says SAG routinely requires productions like \u201cRoe v. Wade\u201d to set up a deposit early on in production to ensure enough money exists for actors to be compensated for their work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cThey wanted an exorbitant deposit, which isn\u2019t normal,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">While that situation was being discussed, he says SAG reached out to the agents of several cast members, warning them the production wasn\u2019t in compliance with SAG rules. One actress, a younger star from a famous film family, left the production due to those calls, Loeb alleges.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cOlder guys, like [\u2018Roe v. Wade\u2019 co-star] Jon Voight \u2026 they know the game. They didn\u2019t give a f***,\u201d Loeb says. It still hurt the production. \u201cWe had to scramble and call everybody and say we are in compliance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The SAG pressure didn\u2019t end there, according to Loeb, who explained that SAG representatives usually spend a limited time on set to ensure stars are being treated fairly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cThen you never hear from them again. Not on our movie,\u201d says Loeb, who previously worked as an actor before trying on multiple hats for \u201cRoe v. Wade.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The SAG representative repeatedly showed up on the set, at one point alleging two crew members were illegally acting in the film, which Loeb says wasn\u2019t true.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">SAG fined the production just south of $500,000 as a result, claiming the film couldn\u2019t be released until the sum had been paid.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Contacted by The Daily Wire, SAG denied Loeb\u2019s charges \u201ccategorically.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cFurthermore, this project started production several years ago, and this is the first we have heard of these baseless claims. The production in question also violated several terms of our contract during production including non-payment of performers and still has several active claims for non-payment with our legal department. The union is legally required to take a serious interest in productions that can\u2019t even make basic wage payments to our members by monitoring them through set visits and other means,\u201d SAG said in a statement sent to The Daily Wire.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">A second \u201cRoe v. Wade\u201d source, one close to the production, backs up Loeb\u2019s claims.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cI\u2019ve been doing this for 15 years, and I\u2019ve never had an issue with SAG \u2026 maybe extra paper work, but nothing contentious, just pushing papers,\u201d the source said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The source says SAG reprimanded the \u201cRoe v. Wade\u201d production for offering walk-on roles for the film to those who took part in a crowdfunding effort to bolster the film\u2019s budget. The production took down the offer but pointed out that other projects had offered similar perks, like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2014\/03\/12\/kickstarter-funding-brings-veronica-mars-movie-to-life.html\">crowdfunded<\/a> \u201cVeronica Mars\u201d film.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cWe were in our right to do so \u2026 but we did take it down,\u201d the source says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">At one point, the source reached out to Brady to iron out some of the issues enveloping the film, but that conversation went poorly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cShe started screaming at me, [saying] she has 10 other more important projects to deal with. She didn\u2019t have the time putting so much energy into ours,\u201d the source says. \u201cI\u2019ve never gotten into a conflict with a SAG rep before .. it was extraordinary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Brady\u2019s pro-choice work seemed like a conflict given the tone of \u201cRoe v. Wade,\u201d which the film\u2019s team told SAG.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cWe notified SAG of her bias \u2026 they elevated our project to her boss, her boss would deal with it .. the harassment didn\u2019t end,\u201d the source says. \u201cOne SAG rep spent the entire day [on the set], interrogating some of our cast members. \u2018Are you being mistreated?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cIt\u2019s been a complete nightmare,\u201d the source says. \u201cSAG had the power to block our release. It\u2019s most powerful union in the entertainment industry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">One matter is beyond debate. \u201cRoe v.
