If people have both susceptibility to the virus and less access to the vaccine, they\u2019ll have even more problems.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Frieden, who served as director of the CDC from 2009 to 2017, said for the passports to work, there would need to be \u201cabsolute privacy,\u201d adding that the vaccine should be \u201cabsolutely opt in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFundamentally, we\u2019re facing a very difficult few weeks and few months. There\u2019s not enough vaccine yet and we\u2019re seeing the highest levels of cases, hospitalizations and deaths the U.S. has since the start of this pandemic,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>In an op-ed <a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/2020\/12\/21\/tom-frieden-covid-immunity-passports\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer noopener\">published<\/a> this week in The Washington Post, Dr. Frieden and co-author Aaron Schwid, a human rights lawyer, wrote: \u201cAs more and more people are vaccinated, it\u2019s time to carefully design a system of \u2018immunity passports.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese passports would serve as a form of proof of immunity, allowing people who have immunity to engage in some activities others cannot. That could make it possible to ratchet down protective measures, such as stay-at-home orders and business closures, without increasing health risks,\u201d they wrote.<\/p>\n<p>If enacted, businesses and other sites like sports arenas and music venues \u201ccould finally reopen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVisitors could return more freely to nursing homes and prisons. International travel could increase. As universal vaccination becomes available, passports will help everyone, not just the lucky few, move from fear to freedom,\u201d they wrote. \u201cAs universal vaccination becomes available, passports will help everyone, not just the lucky few, move from fear to freedom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last month, a top travel industry association said it was in the final stages of developing a digital passport for international travelers so they can prove they\u2019ve been vaccinated for COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p>The International Air Transport Association said that the passport could be key to saving the tourism industry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTesting is the first key to enable international travel without quarantine measures,\u201d association CEO Alexandre de Juniac said in a statement obtained by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/transportation\/527581-airlines-set-sights-on-digital-passports-for-covid-19-vaccine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer noopener\">The Hill.<\/a>\u00a0\u201cThe second key is the global information infrastructure needed to securely manage, share and verify test data matched with traveler identities in compliance with border control requirements.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For travelers who receive the vaccine \u2013 when one becomes available \u2013 proof will be linked to their official passports.
