The technology will now correct gendered words such as \u201cmailman\u201d to \u201cmail carrier,\u201d or \u201cchairman\u201d to \u201cchairperson.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>On May 18, Google held its virtual I\/O developer conference. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-9593261\/Google-Docs-goes-woke-offer-alternatives-words-arent-inclusive-enough.html\"><span>The Daily Mail<\/span><\/a><span> reported that the new update to Google Doc will suggest ways to avoid \u201coffensive language\u201d and gendered language.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Google has made similar changes in 2018 after the company fell under fire for its predictive gendered pronoun language. The company opted to remove gender pronouns from the predictive text feature altogether.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Product leaders told <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-alphabet-google-ai-gender\/fearful-of-bias-google-blocks-gender-based-pronouns-from-new-ai-tool-idUSKCN1NW0EF\"><span>Reuters<\/span><\/a><span> that the technology had to be changed to avoid offending users.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cGoogle\u2019s technology will not suggest gender-based pronouns because the risk is too high that its \u2018Smart Compose\u2019 technology might predict someone\u2019s sex or gender identity incorrectly and offend users,\u201d product leaders said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Google already banned expletives and slurs from predictive technology as well as mentions of business rivals or tragic events in history. The Google style guide was also updated to be more understanding of mental health. The style guide suggests changing the words \u201ccrazy\u201d to \u201cbaffling,\u201d \u201cdummy variable\u201d to \u201cplaceholder variable,\u201d and \u201cfinal sanity-check\u201d to \u201cfinal check for completeness and clarity.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Sundar Pichai, the Chief Executive Officer of Google and Alphabet, committed the company to focusing on social and racial justice issues. In June 2020, the CEO <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.google\/inside-google\/company-announcements\/commitments-racial-equity\/\"><span>emailed<\/span><\/a><span> employees letting them know that the company was \u201cstrengthening [its] commitment to racial equity and inclusion\u201d and would work to \u201cbuild sustainable equity for [its] Black+ community.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Pichai also committed to improving \u201cBlack+\u201d representation in leadership, establishing a range of \u201canti-racism\u201d educational programs, and focusing on \u201cbetter supporting the mental and physical health and well-being of our Black+ community.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Google has acted on its commitment to establish \u201canti-racism\u201d programming. The company teamed up with a nonprofit linked to the \u201ccancellation\u201d of Dr. Suess\u2019 books and Nickelodeon\u2019s race-based special to create an \u201canti-racist\u201d book list for K-12 teachers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Daily Wire <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/nonprofit-responsible-for-canceling-dr-seuss-teams-up-with-google\">reported<\/a>:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"16\">\n<p><i><span>In June, Google\u2019s charity, Google.org, announced that it would partner with the nonprofit, The Conscious Kid, by curating a list of reading materials and lesson plans that support \u201cinclusive, anti-racist K-12 classrooms.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span>The tech giant said in a press release that it supports The Conscious Kid\u2019s embrace of critical race theory \u2014 the theory that America is intrinsically and immutably racist.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>The push for more \u201cinclusive\u201d gender language goes beyond the scope of big tech. Colleges and educational institutions are also modifying language in the name of inclusivity. At Penn State University, the faculty senate <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/penn-state-nixes-labels-such-as-freshman-junior-senior-citing-lack-of-gender-inclusivity\"><span>passed a resolution<\/span><\/a><span> that rid the university of alleged paternalistic labels such as \u201cfreshmen,\u201d \u201cjunior,\u201d \u201csenior,\u201d \u201cupperclassmen,\u201d and \u201cunderclassmen.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>University faculty claim that gendered language comes from living in a male-dominated society, and that terms such as \u201cjunior\u201d and \u201csenior\u201d \u201care parallel to western male father-son naming conventions, and much of our written documentation uses he\/she pronouns.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span>The Daily Wire is one of America\u2019s fastest-growing conservative media companies and counter-cultural outlets for news, opinion, and entertainment.
