Most did not respond, despite repeated requests for comment, and five archbishops declined to comment on the matter.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Archbishops Salvatore Cordileone and Samuel Aquila said that they would first engage in conversations with a high profile individual who persisted in publicly supporting abortion, and then ultimately ask the individual to refrain from Communion.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Catholic archbishops will discuss denying President Joe Biden Communion over his abortion stances in June, but until then, most of them are staying quiet on the matter.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/health-coronavirus-government-and-politics-religion-22e0d1ba299fe8693013036e3cc85c81\">Associated Press reported<\/a>\u00a0in late April that the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) will hold a national meeting in June where the bishops\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/04\/28\/catholic-bishops-biden-communion\/\">will decide whether<\/a> to tell the president, and other high profile Catholic politicians like Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, not to receive Communion at Mass if they continue to publicly advocate for abortion.<\/p>\n<p class=\" story-text__paragraph\">In an early May letter, the Vatican\u2019s Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith Cardinal Luis Ladaria <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catholicnews.com\/cardinal-ladaria-cautions-us-bishops-on-politicians-and-communion\/\">warned the archbishops<\/a> to approach public discussion of the matter with caution. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/05\/11\/archbishop-cordileone-nancy-pelosi-catholic-communion-biden\/\">(RELATED: Archbishop Cordileone Says He Had \u2018Conversations\u2019 With Pro-Abortion Pelosi About Holy Communion)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\" story-text__paragraph\">Any new policy \u201crequires that dialogue occurs in two stages: first among the bishops themselves, and then between bishops and Catholic pro-choice politicians within their jurisdictions,\u201d Ladaria wrote, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catholicnews.com\/cardinal-ladaria-cautions-us-bishops-on-politicians-and-communion\/\">according to the Catholic News Service<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Daily Caller News Foundation asked all U.S. archbishops whether they would deny the president Communion. Most did not respond, despite repeated requests for comment, and five archbishops said they would not comment at this time.<\/p>\n<p>It is a question that not all Catholic clergy agree on, though the Catholic Church teaches that abortion is \u201ca crime against human life,\u201d \u201cconstitutes a grave offense\u201d and that a person who obtains an abortion is automatically excommunicated from the Catholic Church.<\/p>\n<p>Washington, D.C., Archbishop Wilton Gregory, who did not respond to requests for comment from the DCNF, <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2020\/11\/24\/archbishop-gregory-joe-biden-communion\/\">said in late November<\/a> that he would not deny Biden Communion. The archbishop noted that Biden went to Mass and received Communion while he served as former President Barack Obama\u2019s vice president.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not going to veer from that,\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2020\/11\/24\/archbishop-gregory-joe-biden-communion\/\">said in an interview with America Magazine<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But other archbishops have frankly said that if Biden persists in his support for abortion, they would ultimately ask him to refrain from Communion.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, San Francisco Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone warned pro-abortion Catholic public figures not to receive Communion at Mass if they find that they \u201care unwilling or unable to abandon\u201d their \u201cadvocacy for abortion.\u201d The archbishop told the DCNF in an interview that clergy should first have conversations with high profile pro-abortion politicians like Biden before denying them Holy Communion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the case of President Biden or any other prominent Catholic, I think what I would do is if I knew that they were coming into the area here and planned to attend Mass, I would try to have those conversations as well ahead of time,\u201d he said. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2019\/11\/26\/joe-biden-evolve-abortion-hyde-amendment\/\">(RELATED:\u00a0Here\u2019s How Joe Biden Has Evolved On Abortion As He Attempts To Become President)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we don\u2019t say anything, if we don\u2019t speak out, then we are also culpable,\u201d Cordileone told the DCNF. \u201cI tremble at the responsibility that God has given me \u2026 When it comes to pastoral application of church teaching, that\u2019s where pastoral discretion is needed, different judgements might be made by different bishops in different situations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut in the case of someone so prominent as the president of the United States, again this is a scandal, and it\u2019s causing confusion in the minds of our Catholics,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Archbishop Samuel Aquila of Denver, Colorado, similarly <a href=\"https:\/\/denvercatholic.org\/for-the-church-to-live-in-eucharistic-coherence-we-must-be-willing-to-challenge-catholics-persisting-in-grave-sin\/\">said<\/a> that bishops should first have private conversations with the individual.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn responding to individual situations, it is important for bishops to follow the steps presented by Jesus in Matthew\u2019s Gospel, that is, have a private conversation with the person, if the person persists, have another conversation with two or three people present as witnesses, and finally, if the person still persists, then ask the person to refrain from Communion,\u201d Aquila said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>The statement was previously provided to the Associated Press, his director of public relations told the DCNF, but the AP does not appear to have printed it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCharity demands that we help people understand the truth of who they are receiving in Eucharist and that they need to be properly prepared and in a state of grace,\u201d the archbishop continued. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/05\/17\/catholic-holy-communion-joe-biden\/\">(RELATED: Should Priests Deny Biden Communion? Theologians Weigh In)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Shortly after Biden\u2019s inauguration, USCCB President and Los Angeles Archbishop Jos\u00e9 H. Gomez warned Americans <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usccb.org\/news\/2021\/usccb-presidents-statement-inauguration-joseph-r-biden-jr-46th-president-united-states\">in a lengthy statement<\/a> that \u201cwe cannot stay silent\u201d on the president\u2019s pro-abortion stances.<\/p>\n<p>Gomez, who declined to comment to the DCNF through the USCCB, <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/01\/20\/catholic-bishops-biden-abortion-gomez\/\">highlighted<\/a> that Biden has promised to pursue policy \u201cthat would advance moral evils and threaten human life and dignity\u201d \u2014 most notably in regards to abortion, marriage, gender and contraception.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbortion is a direct attack on life that also wounds the woman and undermines the family,\u201d Gomez wrote in January. \u201cIt is not only a private matter, it raises troubling and fundamental questions of fraternity, solidarity, and inclusion in the human community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gomez expressed the hope that Biden would work with the Catholic Church to better understand these issues and to engage in a \u201cdialogue to address the complicated cultural and economic factors that are driving abortion and discouraging families.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Vatican Secretariat of State reportedly intervened before Gomez\u2019s statement could be released so that Pope Francis could first release his statement, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pillarcatholic.com\/p\/breaking-vatican-intervenes-to-spike\">according to Catholic news website the Pillar<\/a>. The pope\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/01\/20\/pope-francis-message-president-biden\/\">statement<\/a>\u00a0made no direct mention of abortion but urged Biden to respect the \u201crights and dignity of every person,\u201d including those who \u201chave no voice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Vatican did not immediately respond to a request for comment from the DCNF. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/02\/02\/media-biden-devout-catholic-liberal-ideology\/\">(RELATED: Here\u2019s Why Media Calls Biden A \u2018Devout Catholic\u2019 According To Theologians, Commentators)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Archbishop Joseph F. Naumann of Kansas City, Kansas, who is the chairman of the USCCB Committee on Pro-Life Activities, also declined to comment for this story through the USCCB. But the archbishop condemned Biden\u2019s abortion stances <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usccb.org\/news\/2021\/us-bishops-pro-life-chairman-responds-president-and-vice-presidents-statement-anniversary\">in a Jan. 22 statement<\/a>, \u201cstrongly\u201d urging the new Catholic president to reject abortion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is deeply disturbing and tragic that any President would praise and commit to codifying a Supreme Court ruling that denies unborn children their most basic human and civil right, the right to life, under the euphemistic disguise of a health service,\u201d Naumann said.<\/p>\n<p>He continued: \u201cI take this opportunity to remind all Catholics that the Catechism states, \u2018Since the first century the Church has affirmed the moral evil of every procured abortion.
