The former Secretary of State also stated that people \u201cdon\u2019t have to give up a quality of life\u201d in order to reduce emissions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cYou don\u2019t have to give up a quality of life to achieve some of the things that we know we have to achieve. That\u2019s the brilliance of some of the things that we know how to do,\u201d he told BBC One\u2019s Andrew Marr show, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2021\/may\/16\/half-of-emissions-cuts-will-come-from-future-tech-says-john-kerry\"><span>The Guardian<\/span><\/a><span>. \u201cI am told by scientists that 50% of the reductions we have to make to get to net zero are going to come from technologies that we don\u2019t yet have. That\u2019s just a reality.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cAnd people who are realistic about this understand that\u2019s part of the challenge. So we have to get there sooner rather than later,\u201d Kerry added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Environmental activist Greta Thunberg slammed Kerry, mocking his \u201coptimism\u201d as akin to works of fiction such as Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cGreat news! According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/science-environment-57135506\"><span>BBC News<\/span><\/a><span>, Julian Allwood, professor of engineering and the environment at the University of Cambridge, said, \u201cIt\u2019s virtually impossible for new energy infrastructure technologies to have a significant effect on global emissions in the time we have left to act.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cFirstly,\u201d Allwood said, \u201cthe new idea is developed from laboratory through increasing pilot scales to initial introduction to national systems. We have to solve physical and operational issues, solve problems with integration, develop legal and environmental regulations, understand financing requirements and explore social consent as the first accidents occur. Growth then occurs at a linear rate, as government appetite for risk is constrained, and the incumbent technology fights to avoid closure.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cDespite politicians\u2019 wishful thinking,\u201d he added, \u201cthe most important innovation opportunities will be not about new technologies, but new businesses in areas such as remote working.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Dr Jen Baxter, a spokesperson for the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, stated that Kerry \u201cseems very optimistic\u201d regarding his proposed timeline.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Thunberg has been outspoken on the subject of climate change on multiple occasions.
