Grace Meng and Hawaii Democratic Sen. Mazie Hirono, passed 364 to 62, above the two-thirds majority required. It <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/04\/14\/senate-advances-asian-american-hate-crimes-bill-gop-filibuster\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">passed the Senate<\/a> 92-6 in April, and now heads to President Joe Biden\u2019s desk to be signed into law.<\/p>\n<p>The bill directs the Department of Justice to accelerate its reviews of reported COVID-related hate crimes, and improves the ways to report them to local governments online. It also includes state and local grants to help improve hate crime reporting, a bipartisan provision that was added by Connecticut Democratic Sen. Richard Blumenthal and Kansas Republican Sen. Multiple <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/03\/30\/asian-american-violence-racism-cefaan-kim-new-york-43rd-street\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">violent attacks<\/a> have been reported in recent weeks alone, and in March a shooter <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/03\/16\/atlanta-massage-parlors-shooting-dead\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">killed eight people<\/a> in an Atlanta massage parlor, six of whom were Asian women.<\/p>\n<p>One May <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csusb.edu\/sites\/default\/files\/FACT%20SHEET-%20Anti-Asian%20Hate%202020%203.2.21.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">study<\/a> by the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism at California State University, San Bernardino, found that hate crimes against Asian Americans increased 150% in 2020 in America\u2019s 16 largest cities.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the wide support, some GOP members criticized the bill for its lack of input from House Republicans.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDespite my history of work on this and my personal experience, no one in the majority sought out my partnership or input on the anti-Asian hate bills before us today,\u201d said California Republican Rep. Michelle Steel on the floor.<\/p>\n<p>Though the bill originally lacked widespread Republican support, it was ultimately endorsed by multiple GOP figures, including Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs the husband of a proud Asian American woman, I think this discrimination against Asian Americans is a real problem,\u201d he said ahead of the Senate vote last month. \u201cAnd it preceded the murders that are on full display.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Biden has repeatedly expressed his support for the legislation, and plans to sign it into law.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe condemn in the strongest possible terms the ongoing crisis of gender-based and anti-Asian violence that has long plagued our nation,\u201d Biden said in a March <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2021\/03\/19\/statement-by-president-biden-on-the-covid-19-hate-crimes-act\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Content created by The Daily Caller News Foundation is available without charge to any eligible news publisher that can provide a large audience.
