Greg Abbott signed an executive order Tuesday barring local governments and public schools from mandating facemasks.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/gov.texas.gov\/uploads\/files\/press\/EO-GA-36_prohibition_on_mandating_face_coverings_response_to_COVID-19_disaster_IMAGE_05-18-2021.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">order<\/a> prevents local governments and officials from attempting to mandate mask wearing starting Friday, subjecting a fine of up to $1,000 for any person or government entity that does not comply. Public schools have through June 4 to continue mandating mask wearing, but after June 4, students, parents, teachers and other staff members will not be required to wear a mask.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Lone Star State continues to defeat COVID-19 through the use of widely-available vaccines, antibody therapeutic drugs, and safe practices utilized by Texans in our communities,\u201d Abbott said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/gov.texas.gov\/news\/post\/governor-abbott-issues-executive-order-prohibiting-government-entities-from-mandating-masks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">statement<\/a>. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/05\/14\/anthony-fauci-centers-for-disease-control-and-prevention-united-food-and-commercial-workers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: \u2018Too Risky\u2019: Progressives Are Upset CDC Lifted Mask Mandate)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" readability=\"15.164772727273\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">TX is prohibiting mask mandates by gov\u2019t entities.<\/p>\n<p>Starting May 21, local govts attempting to impose mask mandates can be fined up to $1K.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re also prohibiting public schools from mandating masks after June 4.<\/p>\n<p>Texans, not gov\u2019t, should decide their best health practices. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/M7iN4sLBJV\">pic.twitter.com\/M7iN4sLBJV<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Greg Abbott (@GregAbbott_TX) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GregAbbott_TX\/status\/1394730325612404741?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 18, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cTexans, not government, should decide their best health practices, which is why masks will not be mandated by public school districts or government entities. We can continue to mitigate COVID-19 while defending Texans\u2019 liberty to choose whether or not they mask up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Government-owned or operated hospitals, jails, state-supported living centers, state Department of Criminal Justice facilities and Texas Juvenile Justice Department facilities are exempt from the order. The jails are exempt \u201cconsistent with guidance by the Texas Commission on Jail Standards,\u201d according to the order.<\/p>\n<p>The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/05\/13\/cdc-maks-guidance-vaccination-indoors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">updated their guidance<\/a> to allow vaccinated people to <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/05\/13\/joe-biden-wear-mask-get-coronavirus-vaccine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">forgo their masks<\/a> in most indoor and outdoor situations.<\/p>\n<p>Abbott <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/03\/02\/greg-abbott-reopen-texas-coronavirus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">lifted the state\u2019s mask mandate<\/a> in March but allowed businesses to implement restrictions as needed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am ending the statewide mask mandate,\u201d Abbott said in March. \u201cTexans have mastered the habits to keep from getting COVID.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Abbott imposed the <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2020\/07\/02\/greg-abbott-texas-coronavirus-masks-executive-order-reopening\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">mask mandate<\/a> in July, months after major cities in the state implemented their own mandate.<\/p>\n<p>COVID-19 cases in the state have <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/04\/04\/texas-greg-abbott-covid-cases-deaths-plummet-mask-mandate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">steadily decreased<\/a> since Abbott ended the mask mandate and other restrictions. The state has also <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/05\/17\/biden-neanderthal-thinking-texas-covid-19\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reported<\/a> no new COVID-19 deaths since Abbott made his March announcement.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Republican Texas Gov.
