That\u2019s not how you become great. That\u2019s how you become dependent, vulnerable, and truly oppressed,\u201d says Whitlock.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>But lately, Whitlock argues, many people have been acting as though America promises not freedom, but love.<\/p>\n<p><span>Last summer, the National Basketball Association NBA <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/nba-releases-list-of-approved-social-justice-phrases-for-players-jerseys\"><span>released a pre-approved list of slogans<\/span><\/a><span> players could wear on their jersey\u2019s while on the court. The list included phrases common in activism, such as \u201cI Can\u2019t Breathe\u201d and \u201cSay Her Name\u201d and \u201cAlly,\u201d but also included the words,\u201cLove us.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Whitlock says that emblazoning a slogan on the back of a jersey, calling for others to love you, isn\u2019t part of the American promise. And those who think it is are looking for love in all the wrong places.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cYou can\u2019t demand love from people,\u201d says Whitlock. \u201cLove is freely given or not given at all. Telling people not to call you this name or that name; or not to act this way or that way \u2014 consciously or unconsciously \u2014 because it offends you will not bring you love.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Rather, love comes in the form of a \u201cmother\u2019s smile,\u201d a kid\u2019s joy when his dad comes home from work, and \u201cwhat God offers you every moment\u201d of the day. <span>\u201cTo the government you\u2019re just a social security number,\u201d he says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Whitlock, who describes himself as \u201cproud to be a black man in America,\u201d argues that the pursuit of freedom \u2014 and not the pursuit of love \u2014 has led to the greatest advancements of equality in the United States.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cBlacks have made enormous contributions to this country. But let me tell you what our single greatest contribution has been. We have been this nation\u2019s moral conscience,\u201d he says. \u201cBlacks have forced America to live up to its best ideals. Our righteous pursuit of freedom \u2014 pursuit of freedom, not love \u2014 compelled this nation to seek and find its better self.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIt\u2019s been a long, hard road. <\/span><span>But we\u2019re close to Dr. King\u2019s promised land. We have reached the mountaintop in politics, in medicine, in space, in literature, in sports, in music, in business. No other majority white country has ever been led by a black man or woman. <\/span><span>Blacks can demand opportunity.
