The trainer has faced challenges to compete in other races ever since, and an investigation surrounding the horse is currently underway.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">NYRA President and CEO Dave O\u2019Rourke released a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/medina-spirit-trainer-bob-baffert-suspended-entering-horses-belmont-stakes-n1267692\"><span class=\"s1\">statement<\/span><\/a> Monday saying that the group needs to protect the integrity of horse racing.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cIn order to maintain a successful thoroughbred racing industry in New York, NYRA must protect the integrity of the sport for our fans, the betting public and racing participants,\u201d O\u2019Rourke said. \u201cThat responsibility demands the action taken today in the best interests of thoroughbred racing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">NBC News <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/medina-spirit-trainer-bob-baffert-suspended-entering-horses-belmont-stakes-n1267692\"><span class=\"s1\">reported<\/span><\/a> that the ultimate decision of the suspension will be decided on the results of the Medina Spirit\u2019s Kentucky Derby investigation. \u201cThe racing association said it will not accept entries or provide stall space to anyone employed by Bob Baffert Racing Stables in the interim,\u201d per the outlet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/medina-spirit-cleared-for-preakness-stakes-race-owner-announces-illegal-substance-found-in-ointment-used-on-horse\"><span class=\"s1\">reported<\/span><\/a> by The Daily Wire, Baffert said that after the Kentucky Derby, Medina Spirit\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/kentucky-derby-winner-medina-spirit-fails-post-race-drug-test-trainer-says\"><span class=\"s1\">tested positive<\/span><\/a>\u00a0for betamethasone, a corticosteroid banned above a certain level in racing.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Baffert said last week that the horse was given the anti-fungal ointment Otomax, which includes betamethasone.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The Courier Journal\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.courier-journal.com\/story\/sports\/horses\/horse-racing\/2021\/05\/11\/bob-baffert-says-ointment-used-medina-spirit-includes-betamethasone\/5019077001\/\"><span class=\"s1\">reported<\/span><\/a>\u00a0that the drug is legal when used as a therapeutic for horses, but betamethasone is illegal when discovered in a horse\u2019s blood on the day of a race.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In a statement, Baffert said that Medina Spirit had gotten dermatitis after the Santa Anita Derby on April 3, which led the trainer to have his veterinarian look at the horse. According to Baffert, the veterinarian recommended he use Otomax.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Baffert said, \u201cThe veterinary recommendation was to apply this ointment daily to give the horse relief, help heal the dermatitis and prevent it from spreading. My barn followed this recommendation and Medina Spirit was treated with Otomax once a day up until the day before the Kentucky Derby.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Baffert said that he discovered last week that Otomax includes betamethasone.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cWhile we do not know definitively that this was the source of the alleged 21 picograms found in Medina Spirit\u2019s post-race blood sample, and our investigation is continuing, I have been told by equine pharmacology experts that this could explain the test results,\u201d Baffert said. \u201cAs such, I wanted to be forthright about this fact as soon as I learned of this information. \u2026 I intend to continue to investigate and I will continue to be transparent.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">As\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/medina-spirit-trainer-says-horse-wasnt-drugged-discusses-cancel-culture\"><span class=\"s1\">reported<\/span><\/a>\u00a0by The Daily Wire, Baffert denied any wrongdoing earlier in the week and said that his horse had not been drugged.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cI never thought I\u2019d have to be fighting for my reputation and this poor horse\u2019s reputation. Because of the new regulations the regulators have put, they\u2019re testing these horses at contaminated levels, and it\u2019s been a horrible experience.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cIt did not happen, and that\u2019s the really seriously troubling part of it,\u201d he added. \u201c[We\u2019re hiring] investigators, but sometimes you never find out.
