Monahan, the attending physician for Congress,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollcall.com\/2021\/05\/13\/mask-wearing-guidance-relaxed-on-house-side-of-the-capitol\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.rollcall.com\/2021\/05\/13\/mask-wearing-guidance-relaxed-on-house-side-of-the-capitol\/&#038;source=gmail&#038;ust=1621440024905000&#038;usg=AFQjCNG1V_4_HJYZ95G_A5TOZhbz1BtSUA\">issued<\/a> guidances relaxing indoor mask mandates for fully vaccinated lawmakers in accordance with CDC guidelines. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D., Calif.) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/nancy-pelosi-to-keep-mask-mandate-house-floor-cdc-guidance-2021-5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/nancy-pelosi-to-keep-mask-mandate-house-floor-cdc-guidance-2021-5&#038;source=gmail&#038;ust=1621440024905000&#038;usg=AFQjCNFaYmaPywD8OixRB9MzYvNh5X9_Wg\">said<\/a> she would keep the mask mandate in place in the face of the guidance from Monahan and the CDC. In a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/sarahnferris\/status\/1394401814502588417\/photo\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/twitter.com\/sarahnferris\/status\/1394401814502588417\/photo\/1&#038;source=gmail&#038;ust=1621440024905000&#038;usg=AFQjCNGh3xjX1EWhEA-UzCY9uGTo4DYCqw\">letter<\/a> issued late Monday, Monahan realigned the guidance with\u00a0Pelosi&#8217;s policy, stating that indoor mask mandates would remain in place for both the House floor and committee hearing spaces.<\/div>\n<p>Rep. Mark Green (R., Tenn.), a retired\u00a0physician, raised the issue during a committee hearing Tuesday morning. He asked about the physician&#8217;s reversal days after Pelosi pushed to keep the mask mandate in place.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Will this committee base its decision on the wearing of the mask in the committee on the science or on the policy being pushed from the leadership of the House?&#8221; Green asked. &#8220;I&#8217;d like to make a recommendation that we ask Dr. Monahan what caused him to change his opinion four days after he said it was OK.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In a &#8220;Dear Colleague&#8221; letter issued Thursday, Dr. Monahan stated that fully vaccinated individuals can take off their masks in most indoor and outdoor areas of the Capitol and return to pre-pandemic activities. The revised guidelines came after the CDC and the White House lifted their indoor mask mandates for fully vaccinated people. Monahan&#8217;s guidelines largely aligned with the CDC&#8217;s guidance.<\/p>\n<p>But Pelosi contradicted the guidance on the same day, telling\u00a0reporters she would keep the mask mandate in place until all lawmakers are fully vaccinated. She also <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/sarahnferris\/status\/1394415371248095242?s=20\">said<\/a> she would extend proxy voting through the beginning of July.<\/p>\n<p>Green said Dr. Monahan appeared to change his guidance Monday after Pelosi&#8217;s comments that she would not lift the mask mandate.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The CDC made the announcement that if vaccinated, a mask isn&#8217;t needed indoors.
