The packs are then washed off with milk or buttermilk,\u201d Reuters\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/india\/indian-doctors-warn-against-cow-dung-covid-cure-2021-05-11\/\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But doctors in India say the alternative treatment for COVID-19 has no footing in science.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is no concrete scientific evidence that cow dung or urine work to boost immunity against COVID-19, it is based entirely on belief,\u201d Dr. JA Jayalal, national president at the Indian Medical Association, told the news agency. \u201cThere are also health risks involved in smearing or consuming these products \u2014 other diseases can spread from the animal to humans.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But there are some doctors who apparently embrace the treatment. \u201c\u2018We see \u2026 even doctors come here. There have been more than 25 million cases \u2014 second only to the United States \u2014 and 278,719 Indians have died, <a href=\"https:\/\/gisanddata.maps.arcgis.com\/apps\/dashboards\/bda7594740fd40299423467b48e9ecf6\">according<\/a> to the Johns Hopkins Center for Systems Science and Engineering. \u00a0The country registered more than 260,000 new cases and a record 4,329 fatalities in the past 24 hours, The Associated Press <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/india-coronavirus-pandemic-health-af56b38fff1b4a3fd4ed5ca35d8f2619\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The virus was slow to get a grip on India, but has recently surged. \u201cInfections in India have surged since February in a disastrous turn blamed on more contagious variants as well as government decisions to allow massive crowds to gather for religious festivals and political rallies,\u201d said the AP.<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"17\">\n<p><em>In the last month, cases have more than tripled and reported deaths have gone up six times \u2014 but testing has only increased by 1.6 times, according to Bhramar Mukherjee, a biostatistician at the University of Michigan tracking India\u2019s battle with the virus. With infections outrunning testing capabilities, there are fears that many cases are going undetected.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-173 Component-p-0-2-164\"><em>Experts also say India has lagged behind in doing the testing needed to track and better understand a worrisome virus variant first detected in the country.
