On Friday, host Don Lemon convinced his audience that CNN had canceled his show, and his viewers had just watched its \u201clast night.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lemon teased an important \u201cannouncement\u201d during his opening <a href=\"http:\/\/transcripts.cnn.com\/TRANSCRIPTS\/2105\/14\/cnnt.01.html\">banter<\/a> with his colleague Chris Cuomo. \u201cListen, I\u2019ve got something I\u2019m going to say at the end of the show. I want everybody to tune in. I think it\u2019s really important,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd I hope everyone is OK with it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During their traditional conversation during the hand-off, Lemon told the \u201cCuomo Prime Time\u201d host that his news \u201cinvolves us, too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd it\u2019s not bad news?\u201d Cuomo asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not \u2014 well, come on,\u201d Lemon replied, before saying, \u201cI don\u2019t think it\u2019s bad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He closed his program, which usually airs from 9 to 11 p.m. Eastern, one hour early by saying:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"15\">\n<p><em>So, earlier I told you I had an announcement, and I do. It\u2019s been really, really great. This is the last night that will be \u201cCNN Tonight with Don Lemon.\u201d So, I appreciate all the years of \u201cCNN Tonight with Don Lemon.\u201d But changes are coming, and I will fill you in. Lemon became the permanent host later that year.<\/p>\n<p>Some tried to spin the dubious nature of the apparent PR stunt. A statement obtained by Grabien Media founder Tom Elliott <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/tomselliott\/status\/1394225163512778755\">attributed<\/a> Lemon\u2019s widescale deception to his \u201cmischievious streak.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"5.1320754716981\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">If that\u2019s what you want to call it <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/XQw7ycQOZg\">pic.twitter.com\/XQw7ycQOZg<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Tom Elliott (@tomselliott) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/tomselliott\/status\/1394225163512778755?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 17, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>That statement is not available online as of this writing. In fact, the network apparently found Lemon\u2019s truthful-yet-misleading comments so embarrassing that CNN seems to have potentially <a href=\"http:\/\/transcripts.cnn.com\/TRANSCRIPTS\/2105\/14\/cnnt.01.html\">removed<\/a> them from its transcript of Friday\u2019s episode. (Its typical transcripts do not eliminate Lemon\u2019s closing monologue.)<\/p>\n<p>CNN has much to be embarrassed about. The overhyped shake-up tacitly acknowledges that Lemon\u2019s show\u2019s ratings failure is due, at least in part, to CNN.<\/p>\n<p>Successful shows don\u2019t change their names for no reason \u2014 and Lemon\u2019s ratings have been abysmal. \u201cOf the top 50 cable news programs in April, Lemon\u2019s show ranked 39th. Lemon didn\u2019t even average 1 million viewers per episode last month (in contrast, Fox News\u2019s Tucker Carlson averaged 3.2 million viewers per episode in the same time period),\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/opinion\/don-lemon-tries-to-resuscitate-flailing-ratings-with-shameless-self-promotion\">reported<\/a> the Washington Examiner.<\/p>\n<p>But dig deeper: Marketers always highlight the strongest possible brand. In this case, CNN thinks the words \u201cDon Lemon\u201d will attract more (or repulse fewer) viewers than \u201cCNN.\u201d The renaming represents an incredible self-own.<\/p>\n<p>The entire publicity-seeking affair begs two questions: If its hosts can\u2019t even tell the truth about themselves, how can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/can-partisanship-and-profanity-save-cnn-from-its-ratings-collapse\">anyone<\/a> consider CNN \u201cthe most trusted name in news\u201d?
