If they are not vaccinated, they are not safe. They should still be wearing a mask or better yet, to get vaccinated,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe also need to say that this is not permission for widespread removal of masks,\u201d Walensky said. \u201cFor those who are vaccinated, it may take some time for them to feel comfortable removing their masks, but also that these decisions have to be made at the jurisdictional level, at the community level. Some communities have been hit harder than others, have lowered vaccination rates than others.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to deliver the science of the individual level, but we also understand that these decisions have to be made at the community level.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Walensky said mask guidance has not changed for the unvaccinated. \u201cWe have to take this foundational step that is completely based in science and understand what it means as we open the entire country,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The CDC director also <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/shows\/state-of-the-union\">appeared<\/a> on CNN\u2019s \u201cState of the Union,\u201d where she said the new guidance will be \u201ca slow process\u201d to be implemented and won\u2019t happen everywhere at the same time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe other thing is every\u00a0community is not the same.\u00a0Not all communities have\u00a0vaccination rates that are high,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd some communities still have\u00a0case rates that are high.\u00a0These decisions have to be made\u00a0at the community level.\u00a0But what we are saying to those\u00a0essential workers is that if\u00a0those workers are vaccinated,\u00a0they are safe.\u00a0So it\u2019s really we are really\u00a0asking the businesses to work\u00a0with their workers to make sure\u00a0that they have the paid time off\u00a0to get themselves vaccinated so they can be safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Walensky also acknowledged that the new guidance has created confusion that will take \u201chard work\u201d to explain.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know that we need to do the hard work. This was individual guidance to understand what this means for communities, what this means for businesses. We know at the individual level the vaccinated people are safe,\u201d she said. \u201cMore than one-third of Americans have been vaccinated, over 45% of adults above the age of 18.
