According to Walensky, vaccines are allowing the country to move forward from the COVID pandemic, which is why masks were always temporary.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said on Friday that the CDC is \u2019empowering people to make their own decisions about their own health\u2019 but this is all on the honor system,\u201d Raddatz said. \u201cThere are people who refuse to get vaccinated, about a quarter of the country, and who oppose mask-wearing, who could see this as a green light to go wherever they want, putting others at risk, especially in those indoor settings, including children and the immunocompromised.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to Walensky, the CDC guidance hasn\u2019t changed for those who are unvaccinated. She indicated those who are unvaccinated, including young children and the immunocompromised, should continue to wear a mask and practice social distancing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf they are vaccinated, they are safe. If they are not vaccinated, they are not safe,\u201d the CDC director stated. \u201cThey should still be wearing a mask or, better yet, get vaccinated.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"9.7125\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Pressed on the challenges in enforcing new mask guidelines, CDC Dir. Walensky says: &#8220;This is not permission for widespread removal of masks\u2026 these decisions have to be made at the jurisdictional level, at the community level.&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/wbEM2Uitmk\">https:\/\/t.co\/wbEM2Uitmk<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/gLIkZl1tdt\">pic.twitter.com\/gLIkZl1tdt<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 This Week (@ThisWeekABC) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ThisWeekABC\/status\/1393918297012375552?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 16, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The CDC director indicated the agency is encouraging businesses to provide paid time off for employees to get vaccinated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut COVID is still undeniably still a threat and CDC has consistently shown us scientific evidence that says you are much safer if two people in a room have masks on. So, if you are unvaccinated in that room and someone else comes in without a mask, you\u2019re not as safe,\u201d Raddatz said.<\/p>\n<p>Walensky indicated yet again that those who are unvaccinated should receive their shots but recognized there\u2019s a \u201cchallenge\u201d because not everyone is \u201celigible,\u201d including children under the age of 11.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, if you\u2019re unvaccinated, we\u2019re saying wear a mask, continue to distance if you\u2019re unvaccinated, practice all of those mitigation strategies,\u201d Walensky said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut who is supposed to be the vaccination police?\u201d Raddatz interjected. \u201cYou look at Costco and Walmart, these essential workers. What are they supposed to do? Again, there\u2019s a quarter of the country who says they will not get vaccinated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are asking people to take their health into their own hands, to get vaccinated. And, if they don\u2019t, they continue to be at risk,\u201d the CDC director replied. \u201cFor the unvaccinated, our policy has not changed. We were going to get to a place in this pandemic where vaccinated people were going to be able to take off their mask. We\u2019re lucky to be there with the science that we have. Walensky: &#8220;We are asking people to take their health into their own hands, to get vaccinated and if they don&#8217;t they continue to be at risk.&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/wbEM2Uitmk\">https:\/\/t.co\/wbEM2Uitmk<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/FQKwQFP8UU\">pic.twitter.com\/FQKwQFP8UU<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 This Week (@ThisWeekABC) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ThisWeekABC\/status\/1393919606167855106?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 16, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Raddatz\u2019s question about \u201cvaccination police\u201d mimics a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ufcw.org\/press-releases\/ufcw-cdc-mask-policy-for-vaccinated-must-recognize-challenges-essential-retail-and-grocery-workers-still-face\/\">statement<\/a> from the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW), a union that represents more than 1.3 million retail and grocery store employees.<\/p>\n<p>UFCW International President Marc Peronne asked the same question Raddatz did:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"26\">\n<p><em>\u201cWhile we all share the desire to return to a mask-free normal, today\u2019s CDC guidance is confusing and fails to consider how it will impact essential workers who face frequent exposure to individuals who are not vaccinated and refuse to wear masks.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cMillions of Americans are doing the right thing and getting vaccinated, but essential workers are still forced to play mask police for shoppers who are unvaccinated and refuse to follow local COVID safety measures. <strong>Are they now supposed to become the vaccination police?\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWith so many states already ending their mask mandates, this new CDC guidance must do more to acknowledge the real and daily challenge these workers and the American people still face.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cVaccinations are helping us take control of this pandemic, but we must not let our guard down. As one of America\u2019s largest unions for essential workers, UFCW is calling on the CDC and our nation\u2019s leaders to clarify how this new policy will be implemented, how essential workers will be protected, and how these workers will protect the communities they serve.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The UFCW is pushing the CDC and the Biden administration to back vaccine passports, something conservatives have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/house-republicans-propose-no-vaccine-passport-act\">warned<\/a> about. A handful of states have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/idaho-becomes-fourth-state-to-ban-vaccine-passports\">outlawed<\/a> vaccine passports from being used to screen Americans before they enter a place of business.
