Though the \u201cInterstellar\u201d actor has not indicated if he got the vaccine, he did <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2021\/04\/roll-up-your-sleeves-presented-by-walgreens-vaccination-special-to-air-on-nbc-1234718547\/\">participate in a vaccination special<\/a> encouraging people to get it.<\/p>\n<p>In an Instagram video post for July 4th last year, the actor wished America a \u201cHappy Birthday\u201d while encouraging people to continue wearing masks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHappy 244th birthday, America,\u201d said McConaughey. \u201cWe is going through some growing pains on this one, aren\u2019t we? But growing pains are a good thing, because how the hell else are we going to grow up? I think we gotta look each other in the eye. I think we gotta look ourselves in the eye.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe gotta look in the mirror and ask ourselves, \u2018How can I be better? How can I expect more of myself and others? How can I be more responsible? How can I have more compassion? How can I have more courage? How can I be more fair? How do I make sure I wear the damn mask?\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n<p>McConaughey said that this \u201ccollective change\u201d will only come as a result of individual changes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe individually make these changes, that\u2019s how we make a collective change,\u201d he said. \u201cThat\u2019s how we get to next year\u2019s birthday and birthdays beyond that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd we start parting again, looking around and saying, \u2018Oh, yeah, we always got work to do. We never arrive, but we improved.\u2019 That\u2019s our chance, that\u2019s our opportunity. That\u2019s on me. That\u2019s on you. It\u2019s game time. Ding ding, we are in the ring, America. Let\u2019s quit messing about and get it done,\u201d he concluded.<\/p>\n<p>The actor\u2019s comments echoed what he previously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/watch-matthew-mcconaughey-spreads-a-message-of-unity\">told Fox News<\/a> in early May of last year about how wearing masks should not be a politically divisive issue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI could feel that this united purpose we all have as Americans to beat this enemy and this virus, that purpose got hijacked a bit by partisan politics,\u201d McConaughey said. \u201cThe narrative became, if you want to go to work, you\u2019re on the far Right. If you don\u2019t go to work, and you want to stay home, you\u2019re on the far Left.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd now even the mask-wearing is getting politicized, where if you want to wear a mask, you wear a mask, you\u2019re a liberal. And if you don\u2019t, you\u2019re a conservative \u2013 and that\u2019s just not true,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>In March of this year, McConaughey said that he was \u201cdumbfounded\u201d by Texas GOP Governor Greg Abbott\u2019s decision to remove the state\u2019s mask mandate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy reaction to that is, I was a little dumbfounded by the decision,\u201d he told CBS. \u201cI understand \u2018go back to work.\u2019 What I did not understand was\u00a0\u2018pull the mask mandate.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not the mask we\u2019re afraid of, c\u2019mon. It\u2019s the word \u2018mandate.\u2019 Let\u2019s not let the word \u2018mandate\u2019 get in the way of practical use of this little tool called a mask.
