The Alabama House of Representatives passed the bill 93-1 on May 6 and the state senate had approved it with a 29-0 majority. The bill\u2019s sponsors are Sen. Steve Livingston, R-Scottsboro, and Rep. Ritchie Whorton, R-Owens Cross Roads.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cYou go from March to November, one sort of time and switching to another time, it\u2019s hard for folks to get used to the change,\u201d Whorton <a href=\"https:\/\/www.al.com\/news\/2021\/05\/alabama-gov-kay-ivey-signs-year-round-daylight-saving-time-bill.html\"><span class=\"s1\">said<\/span><\/a> last week when the House passed the legislation. \u201cA lot of people not used to getting up to the morning, running late and having an accident.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Earlier this year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/bipartisan-group-of-senators-reintroduce-bill-to-enact-year-round-daylight-saving-time\"><span class=\"s1\">a bipartisan group of senators introduced such a bill<\/span><\/a> that would eliminate the biannual changing of clocks around the country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The piece of legislation was called the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hydesmith.senate.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/2021-03\/Sunshine%20Protection%20Act%20of%202021.pdf\"><span class=\"s1\">Sunshine Protection Act<\/span><\/a>,\u201d and was put forward by U.S. Senators Marco Rubio (R-FL), James Lankford (R-OK), Roy Blunt (R-MO), Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), Ron Wyden (D-OR), Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-MS), Rick Scott (R-FL) and Ed Markey (D-MA).<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">According to a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rubio.senate.gov\/public\/index.cfm\/press-releases?ID=ACAE4503-822C-4C91-8C65-0C8B6F524053\"><span class=\"s1\">press release<\/span><\/a>\u00a0from Rubio, Florida already passed a measure in 2018 similar to Alabama\u2019s bill that would allow the state to keep Daylight Saving Time. A federal law is still needed in order for the Sunshine State to hold onto the change.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cThe call to end the antiquated practice of clock changing is gaining momentum throughout the nation,\u201d Rubio said. \u201cStudies have shown many benefits of a year-round Daylight Saving Time, which is why the Florida legislature voted to make it permanent in 2018. I\u2019m proud to reintroduce this bipartisan bill to make Daylight Saving Time permanent, and give our nation\u2019s families more stability throughout the year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rubio.senate.gov\/public\/_cache\/files\/14e39e20-b852-4cae-b98b-258e0c0898a6\/1C912A264D838911D32528FA5B1FD0FB.sunshine-protection-act-2019-one-pager.pdf\"><span class=\"s1\">fact sheet<\/span><\/a>\u00a0provided by Rubio\u2019s office at the time explained the details of the bill, stating that it does not change any time zones, alter the number of hours of sunlight, or make the states and territories that do not already practice it adhere to Daylight Saving Time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">According to the fact sheet, Daylight Saving Time was created in the United States after Germany attempted to conserve fuel in 1916 during World War I. It originally only lasted for six months, but in 2005, Congress expanded the period to eight months of Daylight Saving Time and four months of standard time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">There are advantages to keeping Daylight Saving Time all year, as detailed by Rubio\u2019s fact sheet.
