The Biden administration (or, until seven months ago, its campaign) would speak to reporters on \u201cbackground,\u201d which lets a reporter use the information provided by someone in the administration without naming the official. But stories credited to a nameless functionary carry less weight than those with the speaker\u2019s name and title. If the reporter wants something more authoritative than an anonymous-sounding source, he or she had to give the Biden administration officials (or campaign managers) the ability to approve the exact wording of the quotation before publication \u2014 even if their revision in no way resembles what they originally said.<\/p>\n<p>The administration could also \u201cveto\u201d the inclusion of any quotation, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/newsletters\/west-wing-playbook\/2021\/05\/10\/this-email-is-on-background-with-quote-approval-492792\">according<\/a> to Politico.<\/p>\n<p>Suppose, for instance, that White House spokesperson Jen Psaki inadvertently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/psaki-calls-situation-on-the-border-a-crisis-later-walks-it-back-when-reporter-points-out-her-remark\">called<\/a> the ongoing Southern border imbroglio a \u201ccrisis.\u201d She has studiously <a href=\"https:\/\/nymag.com\/intelligencer\/2021\/05\/how-the-white-house-polices-language-in-washington.html\">avoided<\/a> that term to avoid getting \u201cpulled down in the muck of right-wing-driven arguments about word choice\u201d that would only \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/jen-psaki-says-americans-only-think-theres-a-border-crisis-because-of-the-media\">feed into this issue<\/a>.\u201d So, when the reporter asks for her sign-off, she simply changes the word \u201ccrisis\u201d to \u201cchallenge,\u201d and her original, truthful, candid assessment of the uncontrolled immigration emergency goes down the memory hole.<\/p>\n<p>While these conditions are not new, the frequency of their application has reportedly exploded under the Biden administration. \u201cThe practice allows the White House an extra measure of control as it tries to craft press coverage,\u201d reported Politico.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe White House realized: \u2018Hey \u2026 we can now control what is in [journalists\u2019] stories by refusing to allow them use anything without our approval,\u2019\u201d said Peter Baker. \u201cIt\u2019s a pernicious, insidious, awful practice that reporters should resist.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Politico confirmed the prevalence of \u201cquote approval\u201d with five White House reporters who work for other outlets. They say that they find the editorial request stifling and of questionable integrity \u2014 but they have a problem: They also want access to the administration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe only way the press has the power to push back against this is if we all band together,\u201d a reporter said. But that leaves reporters subject to a Prisoner\u2019s Dilemma: If some aspiring journalist buckles to the pressure, the rest lose readership, credibility, and market share.<\/p>\n<p>The White House has done all it can to stoke paranoia about this possibility. When asked about this questionable practice, Jen Psaki did what she does best: release a carefully worded statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe make policy experts available in a range of formats to ensure context and substantive detail is available for stories,\u201d she said. \u201cIf outlets are not comfortable with that attribution for those officials they of course don\u2019t need to utilize those voices.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Translating that into English, Jen Psaki told the press: Play by our rules or buzz off.<\/p>\n<p>The story contains a gem worth appreciating: The reporters agreed that President Donald Trump\u2019s administration used this muzzling practice \u2014 which they consider \u201cpernicious, insidious, awful\u201d \u2014 \u201cless frequently than Biden\u2019s team,\u201d which \u201calso used the tactic during the campaign.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Obama administration also employed this tactic more frequently than Trump. Yet the media treated Obama\u2019s successor as a uniquely hazardous threat to freedom of the press. After Trump\u2019s election, The Washington Post updated its masthead by fusing the words, \u201cDemocracy Dies in Darkness.\u201d (We can\u2019t help but wonder who approved <em>that <\/em>quotation.)<\/p>\n<p>The Washington Post\u2019s claim to \u201cspeak truth to power\u201d while being owned by the world\u2019s richest man and slanting its coverage in favor of the most powerful man in the free world always sounded dubious.
