Rand Paul (R-KY) excoriated the mainstream media for being so friendly with Dr. Anthony Fauci and refusing to press him on issues, such as why the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease (NIAID)\u00a0was funding the Wuhan Institute of Virology.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking Thursday on \u201cFox and Friends,\u201d Paul reacted to a CBS clip from earlier in the day during which Fauci dismissed Paul\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/watch-sen-rand-paul-grills-fauci-over-u-s-funding-for-wuhan-lab-origin-of-virus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">recent questions<\/a> regarding U.S. grant money that was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statesman.com\/story\/news\/politics\/politifact\/2021\/02\/09\/covid-dr-anthony-fauci-did-not-fund-research-tied-creation\/4450338001\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">siphoned<\/a> off to Wuhan through the EcoHealth Alliance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know, Gayle,\u00a0I just\u00a0don\u2019t want to get into that\u00a0tit-for-tat,\u201d Fauci chuckled to \u201cCBS This Morning\u201d host Gayle King when she brought up Paul\u2019s interrogation.\u00a0\u201cI just don\u2019t understand what the\u00a0problem is with him. I\u2019m just going to do my job and\u00a0he can do what he wants to do\u00a0and we\u2019ll see what happens.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Asked for response, Paul replied, \u201cIf [Fauci] was being interviewed\u00a0by a journalist, they would have\u00a0asked, \u2018Did the NIH, did your\u00a0specific division of the NIH,\u00a0give money to the Wuhan\u00a0lab? That\u2019s incontrovertibly true.\u00a0What he\u2019s arguing is he\u2019s\u00a0parsing his words. He knows his group gave money, but he\u2019s saying, \u2018Oh, it wasn\u2019t for juicing up these superviruses. We gave it for other research.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Paul likened such reasoning to those who claim taxpayer money given to Planned Parenthood does not fund abortion.<\/p>\n<p>Paul said that\u00a0Dr. Shi Zhengli, a Wuhan-based virologist who researched coronaviruses in animals, wrote a paper that MIT scientists claimed was referencing gain-of-function research, which is a form of study that attempts to render pathogens more infectious and lethal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have this in black and white\u00a0from a peer-review journal,\u00a0she said the funding came from\u00a0Dr. Fauci\u2019s NIAID, this is Dr. Fauci\u2019s baby for 40 years, she lists him in the credits, he can\u2019t escape this,\u201d Paul said. \u201cHe did the funding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Paul also questioned why the U.S. is giving any money to China in the first place.\u00a0\u201cChina is a rich\u00a0country and they\u2019re kicking our\u00a0butt in so many places,\u201d he said.\u00a0\u201cWhy would we be giving them\u00a0money for their research? Can\u2019t they spend their own money on their own research?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Explaining how he has been unsatisfied with Fauci\u2019s answers, Paul said he has sent inquiries trying to dig deeper. \u201cWe\u2019re asking specifically for\u00a0some NIH papers and the\u00a0conclusions because in those\u00a0conclusions, we believe it\u00a0will be unequivocal from a group\u00a0of scientists that they will\u00a0conclude that yes, the Wuhan\u00a0Institute was making these super-viruses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statesman.com\/story\/news\/politics\/politifact\/2021\/02\/09\/covid-dr-anthony-fauci-did-not-fund-research-tied-creation\/4450338001\/\">PolitiFact<\/a> fact-check confirms that NIAID did in award grant money to EcoHealth Alliance, which then hired the Wuhan virology lab to conduct genetic analyses of bat coronaviruses.<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"17\">\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\"><em>In 2014, the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease, the part of the NIH headed by Fauci, awarded a\u00a0$3.4 million grant\u00a0to the New York-based EcoHealth Alliance, which aims to protect people from viruses that jump from species to species.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\"><em>The group hired the virology lab in Wuhan to conduct genetic analyses of bat coronaviruses collected in Yunnan province, about 800 miles southwest of Wuhan. EcoHealth Alliance\u00a0paid\u00a0the lab $598,500 over five years. The lab had secured approval from both the U.S. State Department and the NIH.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>PolitiFact goes on to underscore that while NIAID funding the project is \u201cnot in a question,\u201d claims\u00a0that there is \u201cno hard evidence\u201d the grant \u201ccovered \u2018gain of function\u2019 research on a bat coronavirus, which \u2018created\u2019 SARS-CoV-2.\u201d PolitiFact also notes that \u201cFauci has advocated for gain-of-function research in the past\u201d:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"14\">\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\"><em>Gain-of-function research is a\u00a0controversial form of study\u00a0that involves boosting the infectivity and lethality of a pathogen. Proponents of gain-of-function say it helps researchers spot potential threats to human health and allows them to figure out ways to tackle a new virus. Fauci has advocated for gain-of-function research in the past. In a 2011\u00a0article\u00a0he co-wrote for the Washington Post, he promoted it as a means to study influenza viruses.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\"><em>However, there\u2019s no hard proof to support [WorldNetDaily\u2019s] claims about gain-of-function research. The overwhelming consensus among public health experts is that the coronavirus that causes COVID-19 evolved naturally.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>After alleging that Fauci \u201cis\u00a0trying to evade that he funded\u201d the Wuhan lab at all, Paul went on to say that Dr. Peter Daszak, who is president of the\u00a0EcoHealth Alliance that paid\u00a0the Wuhan lab $598,500 over five years, was also the one whom the World Health Organization (WHO) recruited to investigate whether the lab \u201cwas doing anything inappropriate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUltimately, here\u2019s the rub,\u201d Paul concluded. \u201cI don\u2019t know whether it came from the lab. Nobody knows whether it came from the lab. But who would be culpable? Dr. Fauci could be culpable for the entire pandemic. So could Dr. Daszak, and so could Dr. Shi. I\u2019m not saying that happened; I don\u2019t know. But you wouldn\u2019t put the people who gave the money to the Wuhan lab in charge of the investigation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt looks like a cover-up,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>A March report by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/03\/11\/who-investigators-say-covid-origins-could-be-known-within-few-years.html\">CNBC<\/a> quotes Daszak as saying that the origins of the coronavirus will likely be known\u00a0\u201cwithin the next few years\u201d and suggesting that it is likely \u201cwildlife trade\u201d (formatting adjusted):<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"30\">\n<p><em>\u201cI\u2019m convinced we are going to find out fairly soon,\u201d Dr. Peter Daszak, a member of the WHO-led team and an animal disease specialist, said on Wednesday during a webinar hosted by think tank Chatham House. \u201cWithin the next few years, we are going to have real significant data on where this came from and how it emerged,\u201d he added.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Daszak, who is also president of New York-based non-profit EcoHealth Alliance, said it should be possible for collective scientific data to accurately work out how animals with the coronavirus infected the first people in Wuhan, China in Dec. 2019.\u00a0He said the wildlife trade was the most likely explanation of how Covid arrived in China, saying this hypothesis was \u201cstrongly supported\u201d both from the WHO\u2019s perspective and scientists in China.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThere was a conduit from Wuhan to the provinces in south China, where the closest relative viruses to (Covid) are found in bats,\u201d Daszak said, describing this discovery as \u201ca really important clue.\u201d\u00a0Daszak was one of three team members of the WHO-led team of international scientists who spoke during the webinar.
