As part of his \u2018New Portraits\u2019 series, the artist Richard Prince had taken one of her Instagram photos and printed it on a large canvas, priced at $90,000,\u201d reported <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/04\/23\/style\/emily-ratajkowski-nft-christies.html\"><span>The New York Times<\/span><\/a><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cMs. Ratajkowski tried to buy the piece but a Gagosian employee bought it for himself. After contacting Mr. Prince\u2019s studio directly, though, she was able to obtain a second \u2018Instagram painting\u2019 of herself, featuring a photo from her first appearance in Sports Illustrated\u2019s swimsuit issue. She had been paid $150 for the shoot, she wrote, and a \u2018couple grand\u2019 when the issue was published,\u201d the Times added.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"4.0388349514563\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">NFT is up tomorrow <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ChristiesInc?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@ChristiesInc<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/AW3ilvF6Ec\">pic.twitter.com\/AW3ilvF6Ec<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Emily Ratajkowski (@emrata) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/emrata\/status\/1392852522927333376?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 13, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>The image which will be attached to the NFT being auctioned is a \u201cdigital composite showing Ms. Ratajkowski, photographed in her New York apartment, posing in front of the Richard Prince painting that hangs in her Los Angeles home.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>NFTs have revolutionized the ownership of digital works, allowing such products to be \u201csigned\u201d with unique identifiers in the item\u2019s metadata using blockchain technology \u2014 the same technology which underpins the security of cryptocurrency transactions \u2014 thereby guaranteeing their originality.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cAs somebody who has built a career off of sharing my image, so many times \u2014 even though that\u2019s my livelihood \u2014 it\u2019s taken from me and then somebody else profits off of,\u201d Ratajkowski told The Times.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>What makes the issue more complicated when compared to other notable NFT sales is that \u201cThe composite artwork being NFT-ized contains two discrete images: the first is a photo of Ratajkowski in her apartment, the second is (what appears to be) a digital copy of a \u2018painting\u2019 by Richard Prince,\u201d explained by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2021\/4\/24\/22399790\/emily-ratajkowski-nft-christies-copyright-nightmare-richard-prince\"><span>The Verge<\/span><\/a><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cSomeone owns the foreground photo of Ratajkowski in her apartment (possibly the photographer, possibly Ratajkowski herself). Ratajkowski owns a physical copy of the painting by Richard Prince, but she likely does not own rights to digitally reproduce it,\u201d the article stated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>As is the case with most NFTs, Ratajkowski will receive a portion of the sales value every time the NFT is resold in the future.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In late April, the model tweeted about the NFT, writing, \u201c<\/span><span>In a step toward my ongoing effort to reclaim and control my image, I\u2019m thrilled to announce my first conceptual artwork to ever come to market, an NFT entitled Buying Myself Back: A Model for Redistribution.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe digital terrain should be a place where women can share their likeness as they choose, controlling the usage of their image and receiving whatever potential capital attached. Instead, the internet has more frequently served as a space where others exploit and distribute images of women\u2019s bodies without their consent and for another\u2019s profit.
