In a White House\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=TzsWK3YI0bk\">video<\/a> of the meeting, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell can be seen wearing a face mask as well.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPart of getting people vaccinated is to tell them that their lives will be different, changed, better, if they get the vaccine,\u201d Berman remarked during Slavitt\u2019s appearance on \u201cNew Day,\u201d CNN\u2019s morning program.\u00a0\u201cSo why were they all wearing masks? And what message does that send?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Berman responded that he thinks vaccinated people are \u201cstarting to get a little bit impatient\u201d in wondering what they can do safely, such as taking masks off indoors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think the CDC is getting there step by step,\u201d he said. \u201cSo right now you can do pretty much everything outdoors without a mask, you can do everything indoors if you\u2019re around vaccinated people without a mask.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo why were they all wearing masks in there yesterday?\u201d Berman interjected.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not too sure that the president is the average person. I personally think there\u2019s a lot of protections around the president,\u201d Slavitt replied, adding \u201cWhy does he need lots of Secret Service agents? Why do you they belt and suspender everything with the president? Because he\u2019s a very important person.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Republican National Committee quickly mocked Slavitt\u2019s response, tweeting the CNN clip along with a caption saying Biden \u201cviolates CDC guidance\u201d in always wearing a mask \u201cbecause he\u2019s \u2018very important,&#8217;\u201d according to Slavitt.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"7.1413043478261\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Biden COVID adviser Andy Slavitt: Biden Violates CDC guidance to always wear a mask because he&#8217;s &#8220;very important&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/tBppSMXDJR\">pic.twitter.com\/tBppSMXDJR<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 RNC Research (@RNCResearch) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RNCResearch\/status\/1392839745856757764?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 13, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>On Sunday, CNN\u2019s Jake Tapper quizzed Jeff Zients, the White House\u2019s coronavirus response coordinator, on the same issue, asking whether Biden\u2019s mask-wearing is \u201coverly cautious\u201d and sending the wrong message.<\/p>\n<p>Zients responded that Biden is going to \u201ccontinue to follow the CDC guidance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Senior Biden advisor Anita Dunn gave Tapper a similar answer earlier this month, saying the White House does \u201ctake some extra precautions\u201d for Biden because he is the president.<\/p>\n<p>Biden himself was asked by a reporter on Friday about his preference to wear a face mask even around other vaccinated people.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause when we\u2019re inside it\u2019s still good policy to wear the mask,\u201d Biden responded.<\/p>\n<p>The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention\u2019s (CDC) guidance that a vaccinated person need not wear a face mask in small groups of people who are also vaccinated.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. has administered about\u00a02.2 million coronavirus vaccine shots per day over the past week, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/05\/12\/covid-19-cases-deaths-vaccinations-daily-update.html\">according<\/a> to federal data.
